Question Friction Modifier - Anyone use this?

I've read tons of stuff on what the "correct" trans fluid is to use for the MTX-75, and well, lets just say there doesn't seem to be a concrete "best in show".

There was mention made of "Friction Modifier". I was wondering how many of you use this and with what success??

Ford "Honey" XT-M5-QS, no friction modifer.

edit: One exception: You SHOULD use friction modifier if AND ONLY IF you're running a clutch-type limited slip diff.

His trans already has a grind in the syncro, we're trying to make it better, not worse

Plus, MI is a cold cold climate come Nov and 'Honey' will feel just like that - Thick hard to move garbage.

Don't use FM w/ Honey. Do use it w/ Syncromesh.

I ended up using Penzoil Synchromesh with 2 oz. friction modifier.

The trans is super smooth, although, I do still have a small grind at higher RPM's into 3rd, but, it seems to be better then before.

I'm going to check my shifter cables and make sure they don't need any adjustment because I sometimes get a small grind into 4th as well, which, is weird to me.

We'll see what happens, I just wondered if anyone else was rocking this setup and to what degree of success they had with it.

I used 1 qt ford honey, 1qt lucas oil and it got rid the problem you speak of.

Gring into 4th?

Wow, ouch.

That's an odd one.

If the shifter doesn't feel 'out', the cables should be fine.

Make sure you have your clutch bled well, and if it checks out, bleed it some more

You people should really be checking with Terry Haines on this stuff.

I wish he was on FJ to straighten out this nonsense. You can find him actively posting on one of the Contour boards (must be a member to access that section).

You people?

I've spoke w/ Terry before about this.

Speaking through personal experience, not heresay.

For the price of 2 quarts, it should fix transmissions, not make them worse.

I did the same thing with my Ranger transmission - it's a M5OD and has 162k miles on it ... I started using 50% Lucas oil at 100k and it helped alot on making smoother upshifts, but made slightly rougher downshifts ... I think the increased viscosity by adding the Lucas helps decelerate the intermediate shaft in the trans. Which made the upshifts smoother and less prone to grind and has had the opposite on downshifts, but it helped me because I tend to skip gears on downshifts.

Oh no, i've seen it plenty before, but his trans is spotless and brand new.
