I just put my car back together. I was driving home from work and noticed a noise coming from the transmission. 2003 zx3 2.3 5 spd. if I put the clutch in the noise goes away. I dunno what to do. any ideas?

tonight on the way home the noise was gone, last night it was raining so I have no idea

Doesn't sound like a TO bearing to me.If you put(push) the clutch in and the noise gets loud(er),that is usually a symptom of a bad TO bearing.
Sounds more like an internal transmission breaing problem to me.When you disengage the clutch, all activity in the transmission halts. Might be a bad imput shaft bearing.

so, the wheels stop spinning all of a sudden? I disagree... Think about that for a sec ![]() I mean, the TOB argument could go both ways, the bearing could make more noise under load, and the bearing could make less noise under load. Depends on the problem the bearing is having, if any at all. Last edited by illinipo : 07-26-2008 at 03:20 AM. |

If you vehicle is not moving, the selector is in neutral, and you depress the clutch, all activity in the transmission stops. If,at that time, the noise also stops, the problem is usually within the case of the transaxle.A bad imput shaft bearing will do this. Throw out bearings rarely(never) make noise unloaded. When unloaded, the throw out bearing is just sitting there on the collar of the transmission doing nothing and is not in contact with any moving components.
Diagnosing drivetrain noises is difficult enough in person and almost impossible to do over the internet with 100% accuracy.

True if the vehicle is not moving. But if youre moving the diff and the output shaft have to move, regardless of clutch and selector position. Thats a great post tho, I agree. Quote:

now the only problem I am having is around 60 mph it pops out of 5th gear, the noise is the slave cylinder/throw out bearing, that common from what I have read so far. the popping out of gear isn't though

so the noise is the slave cylinder/throw out bearing, the other issue is the 5th gear popping out. I just put in new shift linkage/cables. and its still doing it. I was curious to know if when I pulled the axles out the 2 tablespoons of fluid that did come out would cause that much of a problem?
anyone? help

Did you check the fluid level in the tranny when you were finished with the job. (BTW, what kind of work were you doing to it?) I had a LOT more than just a few tablespoons of fluid spill out when pulling the axles. You said everything is new with the clutch, what type of clutch is in it?

That blows! I was lucky mine didn't do the same thing. Looks like you found a decent deal on the tranny. Good luck.
