Default Fluid is always good

Just got my SVT up and running a week ago and have been driving it. Noticed the trans getting a little noisy at idle, which goes away when you push the clutch in. Figured I'd do a fluid swap, not knowing when the last one was done, and with the car having 97k on it.

Bought two quarts of RP Syncromax, and threw the car on the lift. Pulled the drain plug and....... NOTHING. Maybe a few drips of residual oil, but that's it. There was no fluid in the trans!!

Added the Syncromax, and fired it up, and within a few minutes no more noise. Thank goodness there was no catastrophic damage. Just goes to show, never trust the person before you!

Wow! Bummer.

Keep an eye on the case and/or axle seals to see where that previous fluid may have gone.

X2 on that.

Watch for leaks ... A previous vehicle i had years ago lost the fill plug on the tranny and spit out almost all the oil while I was driving. Good thing I saw the drips and investigated.

the good thing about manuals is that they can operate without fluid for a good while. Im sure it isnt good for them but they will tolerate it. Ive worked on many cars with no gear oil. One was a G-wagon that drove from Laredo to San Antonio for work. Getting stuck in gear. Turned out to be shifter bushings but I found that it was totally empty and had been so for awhile. filled it up and it drove back to Laredo.
