Had a Torsen T2 installed just this past March. For the last couple months, my car has developed a knocking/creaking that is directly related to the drivetrain. It will knock rapidly if I reverse quickly. It also knocks loudly when I do a hard decel. It is not motor mounts as I have all poly mounts and they are all in good condition.
The reason I think the noise is related to my Torsen is that I'm pretty sure I'm only putting power down to the passenger side wheel. The last 10 times that I've punched it in 1st gear, the car pulls very hard to the right and I don't accelerate very hard because I'm fighting for traction. So my question is, can an LSD go bad without blowing up?

It's possible ... check the transmission oil for metal shards/filings - I can't remember if the drain plug has a magnet on the focus.
Also check your axles (especially the cv joints) for damage.

Sounds like a CV. I have the Torsen. been in for 3 years. With 180 whp and hard driving. it's not the weak link like in the stock drive line.

So a bad CV joint will cause power to only be transferred to the passenger side? I punched it while taking a corner today and my inside tire lit up...no LSD action for sure.

its for sure the torsen, this exact thing happened to me earlier in the year, i spent money everything else in the front end of the car to rule out everything and it ended up being the torsen, it'll get worse as time goes on then eventully just knock all the time even going straight, do yourself a favor and get a quaife.

^ yeah man i didnt want to believe it either, thats why i spent money on everything else hoping it wasnt the diff. axles, wheel bearing, inner and outta tire rods, hubs, checked sway bar and motor mounts, everything!!! and once we had the diff out, put it in a vise, and stuck a axle in it and rotated it....the classis knock.... its the POS torsen for sure

Oh my gosh...I dropped 700 bones on that and paid 200+ to install it (in addition to clutch install). That puts a huge damper on my turbo plans. How the hell can I put down 350whp to one f____ing tire! $1200 for Quiafe, FML...

The other bad part is Autotech no longer carries Quiafe so unless some delear in the US has one a quiafe will be more than $1200 from Europe...

IMHO worth every penny, the torsens are not up to the task when it comes to turbo builds

hey, i could be wrong,
![]() but none the less i DO know from experience that the torsen really is sub par to the quaife in build quality and wouldnt use it on a race or high power application.

That's ridiculous, though. I've owned it less than a year. And how the hell do they know if you've been racing or not? It's my daily driver so...

if a c.v. is bad and you didn't have a LSD your car would go no where. you're revs would go up and the bad axle would spin. with an LSD. a bad c.v. would make the car run at 1/2 speed. and make alot of noise. as the torsen is a 1:2 ratio. you would go axectly 1/2. I hope its not your torsen, its not a quick install. somthing you only want to do once. I like the feel of the torsen over the quaife, its more responsive and more agressive. alows me to brake harder later into a trun and still maintain controll.

if you guys need a quaife differential, Terry Haines (Haines MotorSports) is a direct seller and distributor for them for all of his tranny builds. He is by Grand Rapids in MI.
Here is the number so you can call and get a price: its wayyy less than $1,200 as of early summer when i last talked to him, like 6-700 i believe. 1-616-874-1148 secondline@ameritech.net ^ business contact info. |

You sure that's the Quaife for the *Getrag* that is 600-700? Doesn't sound right being so cheap.

This doesn't look promising. Went to the Ford Racing website and under "Warranty Availability" it says "N/A". Sweeeeeet, not. Gonna call them tomorrow and see if I can raise enough of a stink to make them do somethin. A diff that isn't regularly raced that breaks in less than a year. Sounds pathetic to me.

Call Torsen directly (585) 464-5000, or www.torsen.com. Ford won't be much help unless you get someone like Leo Capaldi to help you out.
