Its really not that expensive and minimal tools are required, there are a lot of threads here about it. Look between the cooling fans for a two wire connector plugged into the resistor. To disconnect it depress the metal clip, and pull to remove. Look for a burned out connector, as well as the resistor it plugs into. Contact Tousley Ford for parts or your local dealer.
I ordered mine from Tousley ford and it was around 40. Check the sponsors section and message them or give them a call tomorrow. If your wire harness looks burnt buy that too. I got my harness from the local dealer and it was double the cost.
I know what you mean, took me several years to figure out what the problem was. You can turn on the ac to kick on the fans to bypass the resistor. I finally got sick of running the ac at stoplights and drive thru's every winter
