Can the EXTRA windshield wipers wipe be turned off?

It drives me absolutely insane.

I drive, I push in the wiper/washer controller and the washer/wipers wash / wipe the windshield, then a few seconds later the wipers wipe one more time and they smear all over the windshield whatever new dirt or whatever extra water/liquid drops might've gotten on the windshield.

Now I have to wash/wipe again and hope that nothing else has gotten onto the windshield so that the extra wipe won't make the windshield dirty, THIS time.

I absolutely freakin hate this "feature", I have it on the Mustang, the Focus, and the GF has it on her Fiesta.

It makes me wonder if Ford's "engineers" ever drove these cars in misty rain or light slush or any other kind of conditions where having this "feature" would make the driver go insane.

So, anybody know of a way to disable the extra wipers wipe?

I'm assuming it would have to be done with the IDS, but I know Ford techs that could do it if it's possible ...

No there is not.

And that's very odd. I'm angry any time I drive a Focus/car that doesn't have the courtesy wipe function. Saves me from hitting the stalk again hit what inevitably has been missed.

I completely agree about it being annoying. I hate that extra swipe. More often than not it just mucks up what was a clean windshield.

I despise all this technology trying to 'help' me drive better. My wife's 08 Astra has a message warning about slippery road conditions when the outside temperature is in the 30s.

I know it's cold outside, I just walked outside to the car. And if its dry, then the roads cannot be slippery no matte rthe temperature.

Also, water doesn't freeze until its 32* Fahrenheit or lower. Warning me about ice when it's 37 isn't helpful.

As much as I am oberjoyed about the Focus ST and the upcoming FieSTa I am getting seriously fed up with all this needless techno-gubbins making driving more distracting. Don't even get me started on the proposed 'black-box' data logging.

My next car may just have to be carbureted and without any electronics whatsoever, save for a nice stereo.

My friend and I were having this discussion recently too. Car makers are no longer looking to use technology to make the car better, they are focused on using technology to make the car do more. I am not particularly pleased about this either. If they didn't rust like an Italian car and fold up like origami in a crash, I'd have a 1G CRX or something like that. About the only modern system I can say I would miss is ABS with EBD. It makes the brakes do what I want, just better than I can do on my own.

I use washer fluid with Rain-X in it and this extra wipe only bothers me when the car is moving since when moving the extra wipe only serves to get the windshield dirty .... the Rain-X takes care of whatever leftover washer droplets might've been on the windshield ...

I will try the turn-wipers-on-during-third-wipe-then-quickly-shut-wipers-off procedure and see how that works ... thanks guys

Well, I tried turning on the wipers while they're already wiping from me holding in the wash/wipe button, and (at least in my '10 Focus) the wipers have to be switched to high speed to not get that extra wipe.

Haven't tried it in the Mustang yet ...
