    Default Zetec Throttle Body?

If I take a zetec throttle body, will it fit the zetec, and be like buying an aftermarket throttle body? will it bolt up correctly?

ANyways, i think what he means is will the Zetec TB fit on the SPI. This is something i doubt but i have no experience with the SPI, sorry i was just browsing. LOL L8er Jon

This post needs a bit more clarity... You need to specify whether you are referring to (Focus), (ZX2, Cougar, '99-00 Contour), ('97-'98 Contour) or ('95-'96 Contour) Zetec throttle bodies... and whether you want to bolt these on another Zetec or on a SPI intake manifold.

All except for the plastic Focus TB have the same bolt pattern, similar aluminum bodies and interchange freely. As long as you exchange MTX for MTX and ATX for ATX, swapping is easy... The plastic Focus Zetec TB has the same bolt pattern but has a plastic body.

None will bolt up to the SPI engines... However, you may be able to bore and modify the SPI TB in a manner similar to the way people have modified Zetec TB's.

If you can post or send drawings I might be able to suggest modifications... In the past I looked at boring out and modifying the 40 mm and 45 mm TB's found on the escort 1.9 CVH and 2.0 SPI engines. Similar mods should be possible for the Focus SPI TB.

For example, I have a 57.6 mm bored TB and shaped TB taken from a '96 Contour Zetec on my '00 ZX2 S/R. It flows about +18% better over the stock 55 mm TB.

Removing some material, such as the restriction in the Focus TB, can improve airflow while retaining the stock 55 mm throttle plate... or you can machine a larger throttle plate and bore the TB. However you have to be careful not to remove too much material. Example I approximates the ideal shape where the acceleration of air is close to constant over the region where the diameter is decreasing. Example II will give good results. However, Example III requies a sudden acceleration close to the throttle plate and may be more restrictive than a stock shape. It is better to shape the TB like example II than III.

The point of my extended post was to point out there are other options than just bolting on a Zetec TB. The Escort SPI with the 45 mm throttle plate could be bored to 47.5 mm and the TB reshaped to improve air flow. I haven't looked at the Focus SPI TB... someone mentioned it already has a 50 mm throttle plate. Is this correct ??

You could also extrude hone the runners of the SPI manifold to improve air flow, port match the heads and install larger valves...

Yup I remember somone mentioning 50mm too. Problem is it's a straight through run and the walls are thin. Can't really put a much bigger plate in there. That's why I went to the mustang tb with an adapter plate when I first started with the spi. Might be other tb's that bolt on but I don't know which ones would.

Can aluminum be welded for cheap?

Hypothetically speaking... if I was to grind to much through and have a small hole in cast aluminum, can that be repaired?

    Just wondering.

    SAWEET! Thanks.

I mean: Oh, should I ever need such a repair, I'll now know it can be done.

When I was gutting the intakes on the T-Bird I got a little carried away with the plasma cutter and holed the upper twice. JB Weld does wonders.
