Exclamation The All Encompassing Intake Thread...

...Well, it's not all encompassing yet. But with people's contributions, it can be.

I've noticed an influx of intake questions as of late, and since this seems to be most peoples' first mod and it is relatively simple, we should be able to compile a GREAT list when we put our heads together.

So if everyone could contribute their personal intake experiences, I'll occasionally edit this post w/ updated information. I'd just like everyone to post up here with the brands/combinations/sizes of parts they've used, even if ghetto rigged. Let us know what you've tried and what you've liked best. I'll start.

TIN_MADDOG:

Stock--relatively boring, hence the upgrade.
Stock w/ CoolFlo--nice change, a bit more pickup, nice sound.
Coolflo w/ Iceman upper--much deeper tone, nice feel when mashing the gas from a roll.
Coolflo w/ Iceman upper w/ 3" dryer vent hose replacing the snorkel; routed to lower grill--not too much change, just maybe less heatsoak.
Iceman Upper/stock MAFS/fudged-up AEM knockoff/AEM bypass/ITG from Focussport--to quote Gabriel: "Like Holy WHOA! " This is rocking! The Iceman and CoolFlo mix was rocking, too, but DAYUM! This FRANKINTAKE really hits hard at all RPM's. So far, this is my fave. The Iceman/CoolFlo combo is my second fave.

MUTTLEE:

Stock - yeah right
Stock/resonator delete - throaty sound still stock though
MAC Intake - awesome sound+quality..great intake for sub 70 degree weather

ANDREB:

STOCK INTAKE
STOCK INTAKE + RESONATOR DELETE (sounds better)
STOCK INTAKE + CONE FILTER (sounds even better)
STOCK INTAKE + PANEL FILTER + MODDED AIRBOX + SVT SNORKLE + RADIATOR COVER DELETE
EBAY CHEAPO SHORT RAM had to be modified to accept a 60mm MAF.

for the sound, the short ram is my favorite but I hate it for the lags on hot summer day

for performance, my all time favorite is the stock intake/panel/svt snorkle ...no lags at any rpm, pretty silent

FordFocusDanielSan:

Stock -
RED(if that makes a difference) iceman - little better off the start. nicer sound
AEM cold air - more power throughout the band compared to the iceman. awsome sound

Gigaherz:

stock
iceman upper w/cone filter on maf = little more power and ALOT more induction noise
bombz cai= more lower end power, less noise and cool suction sound at wot

STEBLE01:

stock with res box removed = no power gain but more sound
stock tube with filter = more performance with noise
bomz cai = all around better exept in the winter i revert back to filter on the stock tube.

El Diablo:

AEM CAI = More sound , more power (top end)

FS Cool Flo = my winter setup = Same gain compared to AEM CAI but, a bit less of power in the top end....

bryan_ruiz:

Stock-Boo, what is that a sneeze?
Weapon-R Intake-Holy Crap I think I [censored] myself.

steve_O:

Ebay Short Ram intake... works pretty good so far. Will see how it does in hotter weather.

This intake is freakin awesome, anyone else w/ one will and can agree.

H20Boy:

Was runnig a BOMZ. I have had 2 BOMZ CAI's and I THOUGHT they were good. With all the uproar over intakes on the boards I go to, I tried a little experiment.

First off: The BOMZ...OK I guess, and cheap to boot.

So I switched to my BPT intake with a Ractive filter. We all know Ractive filters suck, but it still kicked the BOMZ azz all over the road.

Then I switched to an ICEMAN upper with a Pro-M 70mm MAF. This is what I'll be runing from now on. It kicks any other CAI I tried to the curb. So from now on it's an ICEMAN upper with a MAC filter and a 70mm Pro-M MAF.

Sorry Tin, just more taillights for you!! ( <-- We'll see...)

HALO:

Stock TB
Stock tube to TB
Stock MAF
Conical Filter with bottom of airbox (so it doesnt rest on the metal)

Loud, quick starts, and pulls a lot until your past 50. But loud.

NOS2Go4Me:

Stock - yeah, we all know that one.

Stock box with resonator delete and K+N panel filter - nice growl, some more pull, but lacking in overall WHOA factor.

3" inlet K+N cone filter (RE-0930) grafted onto the stock MAF, stock tubing from the MAF back - MUCH better response and pull "out of the hole" and when rolling on in 2nd and 3rd (auto). Also has quite the wicked snarl to it under load, especially when the secondaries open!

AEM Cold air intake for Zetec works on the SPI too that is what i have allthough i run mine to the front bumper not the front of the car near the hood. and i also cut the flange on the boot and use no supports it is stiff and stays in place without them,

Loving my Ractive intake and 3" K+N cone filter. It seems to have cleaned up the engine's willingness to pull across the rev range.

Pics:

The bracket shown in the first picture has since been hammered flat, or in other words right after I took that picture.

Can I show you something that could work fine...?...

Diameter of alum pipe is 70mm
Silicone hose same.
Filter is a common cotton Simota is called. Lenght is 18cm-7inc and diam is 15cm 5.9inch.Filter has also an opening in front. The cone is covered by a pipe which goes uo to the right grill.

PS.Its not an Spi but I beleive idea is the same...

Stock- ...yeah
Stock+Resonator delete- Great growl at high RPM

Injen Short Ram- stil utilizes stock snorkle and resonator delete. Sounds great! a little bit loud when you turn the car on, a constant sucking sound, which isn't such a bad thing.

Injen Short Ram+Radiator cover mod- Instead of completely removing the radiator cover I simply cut an opening of where the snorkle would get the air coming through the front grille. Then I bent a small piece of sheet metal placing on end under the grille and one end under the snorkle to give a better flow to the air coming through the grille and up into the snorkle. Sounds great.

i got a $5 cold air box out of a 90 eclipse from a junk yard (cone shaped filter) and took out its MAFS, then i broke off the plastic piece and bent the metal mounts in so it could fit where the old cold air box was, then i used a 3in adapter between old MAFS and new box, very cheap.

I've had on my SVT:
STOCK + K&N PANEL FILTER - not bad
COOL-FLO - awesome but not street legal
AEM CAI - awesome + street legal, BUT I almost hydrolocked my engine twice last winter....once in my apt complex going thru a puddle at <5mph (had no choice) and once on the EB 91 (frwy was flooded from a thundershower shoulder to shoulder and that almost killed my car)
I'm going to put my stock airbox back on and put an ITG panel filter in it since here in So Cal the winters are becoming increasingly wetter and wetter and I don't want to f...up my car.

if you guys help me i can spend pictures of a real intake that will kick all those in the dirt and acutally give you some real cold air and some power that will help instead of all those that sit there and suck hot engine air.

volant true cold air intake, with the optional snorkel (if u can find one) and then use a rubber duct hose of some sort, and run it between ur fender and the battery to down behind ur bumper, then take ur stock snorkel and modify it to collect air from below ur fender. because the volant snorkel replaces it, but theres still a port in the volant air box to run the stock snorkel somewhere else.. and if u arent able to find the volant snorkel then take a gardeners kneeling pad and spray 3m adhesive spray on it then set it on the intake sticky side up and close ur hood.. it closes off the top of the intake.

Threw a ractive filter on the end of my stock intake tube. sounds nicer, a little better response. Plan to cut a hole in the hood and scoop the air from the top. gonna mod my cone filter to attach right to the intake and run a super short ram right out the hood. mwa ha ha ha.

Heh i'm pegged as a LOT of things. Ricer is the least of my worries. besides it's just an idea so far, i might figure out a way to throw in some boost, but in the SPI really no point, think i'll just stick to making it look a little nicer and then when it's time to go fast i'll buy a fast car.

no point to boost an spi? well i guess tyheres no point to boostr anyfocus, the spi is only a little more involved then boosting a zetec, or a duratec.

Oh and by cutting a hole in the hood i mean putting a hood scoop over the hole and making a real ram air, not just cutting a huge gaping hole and leaving it for rain to fall in. So here's the plan to make a ram air out of a hood scoop. hole in hood is the easy part, air comes in from front, down piping, piping turns into a ONE loop spiral for the air to travel downhill and then uphill. I'm hoping that this spiral idea will avoid any vaporlocking issues. drill a small drainhole in the bottom of the spiral to deal with any moisture issues. because air follows the path of least restriction (much like electricity) it will continue in it's path toward my intake manifold, hopefully without any adverse effects and making a nice little short ram air intake. My lack of pipe bending equipment leaves me limited to 2.5 or 3 inch PVC piping. i figure the air is going to be moving fast enough that I won't have to worry about cooling issues since the piping will be so short.

Can you zombie a sticky?

Anyway, I'm trying to decide what to get for my '02 focus. I'm pretty much going to have to get a short because we get a lot of flooding where I live in So. IL...

Apparently I'm blind because where I look I can't seem to find one that fits my model... It's the SE, and the vin code is a "P" in the engine... as in 1FAFP34P62xxxxxxx...

Any suggestions?

Have a great day!
