We've been tinkering with these issues for a while now with one of our cars. Any part we release undergoes severe testing and evalutaion.

I understand why us Zetec guys want to be able to swap into a duratec, but why do duratec guys want to go from 2.0->2.3.

Is the D20 light years behind the D23? I know us zetec guys are getting up there in miles and when replacing an engine, why not use a more advanced block that will ultimately have more places to go modification/power wise. Is the cost of moving from a D20->D23 really justifiable?

And don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to say it is a stupid product idea. I support every single (non-rice) mod for the Focus. I am just generally curious why D20->D23 is worth the 2-5 grand it will end up costing.

I think this is a great idea! Bout time the aftermarket started steppin up with this stuff.

If we get too swap happy, people will confuse this for hondatech!

In all honesty, the price you are going to have to end up paying for the entire conversion package is not worth it for the power increase. There are other options for far less money that people could exercise if they are savvy enough to do a motor swap.

1. Take out motor. From a quality auto parts recycler. Greenleaf automotive for example. You could get a motor from them for anywhere from $1000.00 to $1500.00 for one with only 1000 miles on it. I just did a quick search.

2. Have a motor built. Build a motor for boost or N2O. If you are going to spend $5000.00 dollars to build a focus motor, the thing better make some serious HP. After owning my Cobra, I will never be able to justify such vast amounts of money for only ~175-200 hp with modifications. It's just not worth it. At that amount of money, I would be looking at a setup that will produce serious horsepower.

Just my thoughts.

You would actually be surprised. $5K won't get you too far in a 'super high horse' forced induction build up with engine cost.

That will maybe get you your turbo kit with all of it's components.

This is a good point.

To those of you who requested a 2.0 Dura to 2.3 Dura "upgrade kit",...

What aspects of this conversion would justify the cost for you?

I'm just curious.

The one other thing I wanted to mention was that a focus costs between 10,900 and 17,000 dollars for a brand new model. Why would someone want to spend anywhere from 1/2 to 1/3 of the original purchase price of the car for only ~20 more horsepower? The numbers don't add up. Am I wrong?

Potential, my friend. The 2.3 (and 2.0) Duratec(s) respond much better to mods with a lighter Alum block.

Do some serious research on the differences between the 2.3 Duratec and the 2.0 Zetec and SPI and it will soon become clear. The Zetecs and SPI's are phased out and the aftermarket will follow soon enough. With Mazda using this engine in almost every car, theres going to be a lot of tech info, and aftermarket parts galore.

Your comment about getting a motor from an auto recycler is exactly why I think the kit would work if it was setup as a DIY.

What I see is supply the consumer with the mounts, wiring, and basically instructions and whatever small bits that would need to be fabricated for this. But if the consumer is set out to source his own motor and transmission then it would not cost that much. If I did this set up I would for sure be buying a used motor from ebay or a salvage yard and then take the time to clean it up and do what I need to it while its out of the car. Then after you have a write up from someone like Steeda then you people will be able to do this in a weekend for sure.

i didnt bother reading the other posts too much... but um all u'd need is a 2.3 shortblock.......... to go from 2.0 -> 2.3

it would also have to include tuning and w/e little things dont match up. i think the compression would have to be changed on the pistons or something done with the head, im pretty the 2 engines have dif compression. but thats another thing u could offer is dif compression pistons for ppl who may want boost and then u could offer forged rods too!! boy im full of ideas! .... WAIT maybe even custom bore?! 2.5l FS turbo

but u could resuse the 2.0 head.. right? with minimal power difference, hopefully some one can help me on that one.

edit: a 2.3 short block from ford is $1,686.26
im pretty sure steeda would get them for ALOT cheaper, I would say that price with forged internals would be sick! but i dont know what they could even do price wise.

I think it is a great idea. Also, if the rumors are true that the 2.3 will be discontinued as an option on ANY Focus in the next year or so then it will be even more important to have this kind of kit available.

What is funny is that your wanting to get rid of the zetec for a duratec. What about us SPI guys. The zetec is a direct replacement for us, so then that would make this swap for us too right? 01 Duratec, sounds rare, lol.

i would take that. cause all the mods are better in the d2.3 then the d2.0. and you can give a used d2.0 to a dieing zetec. my d2.0 only has 25k in miles so.
