I can add a definite yes on the header and over the crossmember pipe - two areas of the ZX3 that needed some attention - but as to the rest of the system, I'm not 100% positive.
Here's a side view showing the magnificent header: ![]() Here's a shot of the underside where every bend I can see does look to be mandrel bent: ![]() Hope this helps! >8^) ER |

When can we order the header cat combo? How much money? Will it be smog legal in California?

Cool, thanx Peloton25. I probably won't bother changing it out then. The cat looks a little restrictive with it's upward bend right behind the engine but I think I can live with that. I'm sure finding an aftermarket cat to fit will be tough though. Nice shot of the engine BTW.

The last answer might come as a surprising "No", but it's because you aren't allowed to relocate the catalytic convertor. Even though the SVT has it's cat there and passes emissions, putting it there on your ZX3 would be just the same as eliminating it completely - there's just no way your car would still pass. Huey - I think the cat has to take that upward turn for clearance, so there's probably no other way. There's more photos to be found here if you haven't seen them already. Check out my other albums as well - lots of good stuff! >8^) ER |

Is that to say that a regular Focus with a SVT exhaust would not pass in any state, or just CA??

You'll have to check with your local governing body to be sure, but it's more than likely true for most. >8^) ER |

MagnaFlow has their prototype exhaust system on my car now for some longer term test. If you are wanting a Little more sound from the exhaust, not the Import sound Kazoo bla bla bla
It has a deeper sound and really nice tone to it, I love it. HP / TQ gains are little, and it is totally different from the ZX3 system. The only way I could discribe it would be , the european raodsters deep purrrrr It sounds great @ 5-6-7000 rpm @ 1AM and going for a little DRIVE Magna flow said the more Inq. the faster the production, or "PREORDERS" The SVT Engine is very peaked and tweeked, and the gains are small(more test is a couple weeks will have the final results). The sound is what I like from the car, If I wanted it QUIET I will buy a electric car and hear NOTHING. Sports car, Sport sound and if it's to loud you are to F***ing OLD ! www.magnaflow.com See ya |

Erik, i kinda might disagree here, and here's why - its my understanding that the SVT retards the timing not merely to pass, but to be an LEV or ULEV (ie, very very clean). A ZX3 with a SVT header/cat wouldn't retard the timing, and wouldn't be a LEV or ULEV, but may still pass the higher emissions threshold. Maybe cali is so restrictive this is not so, but i think (pulling ths outta my ass) that this combo would be "49 state" legal.
Just my $1.02 Inflation's a bit@h
quote:
Originally posted by Peloton25: I don't know about every state, but if your state requires emissions inspections, they probably have similar laws to CA. Maybe I missed it, but could you give us the curves to see the difference from stock. Is the peak horsepower and peak torque to low to make a difference. I am more interested on the whole area under the curve and deciding if the cost is worth the gain.

There is only one problem I can see to adding the SVt header/CAT combo.. The SVT uses an "EGRless" system whereas the ZX3 uses an EGR valve and tube to the header. Without it, the engine "could" do all sorts of thing's but my biggest concerns are check engine light and might not run right. We are currently working on a fix for this problem that will allow ZX3 owners to maintain their EGR... I will post all the photos once the install is complete...

Just my $1.02 Inflation's a bit@h

Just to clarify, I was speaking more towards failing the visual portion of the inspection. In Cali, even if your car flies through the sniff test, it still must pass the visual inspection portion. They don't even care if your new setp is cleaner than the original - they just don't want people messing with things. So, relocating the cat to beneath the oil pan would cause you to fail no matter what. >8^) ER |
