We don't know what the official rating is until the government determines it. Our own internal tests are just "taken under advisement." Should know the official numbers within a few days.

On Kelly's Blue book they have an EPA Estimated MPG at:
21 City, 25 Highway That's about what I get on my ZX3, so I'm not disapointed. This might be a load of crap, but it's there www.kbb.com |

Yeah I saw the same thing but the ZX3 about 5 mpg more then the SVT in city/highway driving....hmmm
Better then the Mustang I have now where I get 20 mpg going on a highway/backroads with stops loop. Scott |

I'm just worried that the same ratio that I have with my ZX3 will hold over to the SVT. That would mean 20 hwy and in the teens for city driving. The cost doesn't bother me that much, it's the small gas tank.
I was reading a review of the EVO VII that discribed the reviewers displeasure with the 13 mpg and the 12 gallon tank. I hope I don't know how he feels (till i get my EVO ) |

I'm all pissed about my milage, but its my fault (i drive may too fast) and I get about 23 city, 28 highway. How does anyone get in the teens? Unless you have some fuel solution or something? Or carry three 300 pounders
Oh, and BTW, autobytel or someboday had the SVT at like 25/31 - BETTER than the ZX3 [ 04-10-2002: Message edited by: chuck-d ]</p> |

I saw it on the window sticker and it official:
21 City, 25 Hwy. My dealer brought me in to show me the first SVTs that they got. Not mine of course He then proceeded to try to screw me by telling me my monthly payments are going to be $100 more than what we had orignally discussed. I am more than a little annoyed. We'll see who plays better hardball. The Mazda 2.3 in europe has 34Mph Hwy.
The 2.3 also makes 167hp and 155lbs of torque on regular gas. 21/25 is pitiful. the Se-R gets 28mpg hwy. |

21 and 25 is worse than my '96 Mustang GT that I am replacing. High performance is not the same as high gas mileage.

These numbers seem odd enough that I checked the epa's site. The hwy numbers are done on a dynometer simulating a 10 mile rural drive that averages 48 mph. Then they are "corrected" down 22% to reflect typical mileage in the real world. So, to get the 25, the SVT really got 30.5 on the dyno test.
They don't say (anywhere that I could find) how lead footed they are. Do they look at the specs; 170hp, 7k redline; and require that they floor it all the time and run it to redline? |

Milage may vary, but as I've mentioned before, the ZX3 is rated at 25/32 or something and I usully get 20/25. I'm thinking that means I'm gonna get 16/20 in the SVT. Performance or not that sucks.

That mileage is a little disappointing, but it is alot better then the 12 or so I am getting in my '73 Impala that I have driven daily for 6 months or so.. |

I'll take that mileage since my Probe only gets 18-21...
But in truth, don't knock the mileage till you test it yourself. You might find the mileages hangs more toward the 25 side, than the 21. If after driving your car the mileage still sucks.. then we'll grab our torch and pitch-forks.. and head over to SVT |

Now around town's a different story - 15-18 mpg. Worse yet? 9 mpg driving around Willow Springs and to and from the gas station! Maybe the SVT will surprise us, and get BETTER mileage than the ZX3, or at least stay above 20... SVT-STi-M, Man you must really run your focus hard.
In Highway driving situation I can get 30+ usually averag about 25 to 28 though. And I run mine to 5k rpm once a day or so, usually spend some of my highway time in 4th at 4k at 70mph. If you get 20 to 25 you must run hard, or have problems with the engine. |

As an air punp the engine can pump the same amount of air using less energy. It can also pump *more* air, at which point it will certainly use more fuel. If you keep your foot out of it and don't rev beyond 6k rpm (where other go fast parts kick in) it should burn less gas to produce the same hp as the stock engine. That really only leaves the tire's greater rolling resistance to account for a negative impact - and I just can't see them making that much difference. |

Just FYI, in the 20 March Autocar (I believe it's English) they compare the ST170 to the Civic Type-R. They obviously prefer the Honda but to stay on this thread, they list the ST170 as getting 22.8 mpg Urban and 39.2 mpg Extra urban. An English gallon is about 1.2 of our gallons so these numbers work out to "about" 19 city and 32.6 highway. I will be VERY unhappy if my SVT gets only 25 on the highway...my Mustang 5.0 gets better mileage! Just thought you'd like to know.

I got 171 miles out of a full tank in a ZX3 w/Auto once before. I was having lots of fun though...
If you're light with the throttle your mileage will reflect that - if you're not, you've gotta pay the price. >8^) ER |

2002 ZX3 mileage. Unless Edmunds.com is wrong (haven't look at the sticker on the door of a new Focus). Just responding to the regular Zs posted mileage.
Kinda odd, would have expected the SVT to be very similar to the ZX3. Oh well, gas is cheap... but thats pretty crappy just looking from a displacement and weight standpoint. |
