Default Grinding on warm starts

I've had this problem for quite some time now, every once in a while when the car is warm, I'll turn the ignition, the engine will crank once or twice and then let out this horrific grinding noise until I let off the ignition. If I try to turn the ignition again too quickly it will grind again. But if I wait a couple of seconds it will generally start right up. Yesterday at the track it was really bad. The car grinded three or four times in a row without starting up before it finally turned over.

Now, this has been going on intermittently for well, over a year. I remember it first last summer. Since then I've installed a supercharger, blown my engine, uninstalled supercharger and replaced the short block, and it still does it. So that leads me to believe it is the starter. But before I dump some money on a new starter I just wanted to get some more opinions.

Starter or a damaged flywheel.

The flywheel has been changed to a Fidanza and it still happens. Could it be damaging my flywheel? How much is a new starter?

My guess would be the starter. Check with Steve at Tousely Ford for a price on a starter - I'm sure he can get you a decent price.

not sure on cost of starter but you might wanna make sure your started is shimed properly as well, good way to test solinoid as well is take it out and tap some power to the lead of the solinoid see if the gear pops out

i hvae a fidenza flywheel too and i was thinking maybe it's the teeth . so when i took the motor out last time i noticed it was fine . so it's the starter .

it's the clutch on the starter . it's not a difficult thing to replace if u can get under the car

I'm thinkin we make a list...better yet a parts pool (coughNor*Calcough) of spare parts. Like if you happen to come across a cheap starter, buy 2 and we list it in the pool. If someone needs it they can buy it from ya whenever they have the cash. Spare tire.....spare alternator.....spare starter, sounds good to me. I bet Steve would love all the business.

Thanks for the update. Did you get an OEM replacement or a performance starter?
