Default M5? What M5? CTSi!

From TCC
<blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><hr>

Cadillac will roll out a 400-horsepower version of its new CTS sedan early next year. The hotted-up CTS will draw power from the same LS6 engine used in the top-of-the-line Corvette Z06, and it will mark the launch of a new generation of high-performance Caddys, a program TheCarConnection first reported on last year. Tentatively named CTSi, the vehicle is aimed at a lofty standard: “the goal is to beat the (BMW) M5 in every turn,” says a GM source. Initially, there had been some expectations that the performance sedan would use either a modified Cadillac Northstar V-8 or even a supercharged version of the current CTS V-6. But cost, complexity and availability issues came into the equation—and GM’s product guru Bob Lutz, gave thumbs up to the LS6 package after driving a prototype. Some packaging changes will have to be made to the LS6, so exact specs are still undetermined, though the CTSi is being described as “blisteringly fast.” The big V-8 will be mated to a six-speed manual transmission. And there will be a subtle upgrade of the base CTS’s exterior and interior. Meanwhile, a “400-plus” horsepower XLR roadster is still on schedule using a supercharged version of the Northstar engine. It now appears, according to several Cadillac sources, that the powertrain will also feature a Formula One-style paddle shifting sequentially-shifting manual transmission.

Hahaha, I'd like to see a Caddy take on an M5, that would be some funny s.

Don't forget that Jaguar(Ford) also has a 400hp S-Type R that is coming our way, so Caddy is also up against that too.

It's good to hear that there will be more competition for the M5. However, BMW will raise the bar again with the V10 M5 we've been hearing rumors about.

While competitors are trying to catch up, BMW keeps raising the bar.

the Jaguar is not that great, from a performance standpoint
Ford said they felt it's buys wanted a smooth car, not a fast and spoorty one, so it has a slow shifting tranny with tall gears

check out the current C&D they did a review on it

CTSv

For Cadillac, the V-Series performance designation will mean a number of upgrades, including “substantially increased horsepower (possibly 350 to 400 hp on the CTS),” performance-tuned suspension, increased front air intake, dual exhaust with prominent pipes, bigger wheels, tires and brakes, standard Stabilitrak stability control and interior enhancements.

This is the Logo of the V-Series (Caddy's version of ///M, AMG, or SVT)

Unfortunately Cadillac just bailed from their LeMans program. So ANY street cred they might have been stirring up is gone now.

I've driven the CTS it is one hell of a car for the cash, hard to belive it's GM. I'm hoping for GM's sake the Lutz turns things around. I think the real appeal of a CTSi will be the price, I'm sure it will come in at least $10k less than the M5.

Gosh... if we were talking about people instead of cars I would call you guys all racists. Its like when I try to talk about the new SVT Cobra or GT40 to a hardcore Honda (at minimum "import") buddy at work, its immediately dismissed as "Ford crap".

I'm like... ok brand loyalty is alright when purchasing, but how can you claim these are "crap" when you know absolutely NOTHING specific about the GT40 for example??? Ugh...

And while the M5 is still a gorgeous vehicle, its quite heavy at over 4K lbs already. If this hot-rod Caddy were out right now... mags are already raving about the handling of the current CTS, but in addition it'd have more power and torque with the excellent LS6 possibly mated to a 6-speed paddle shifter, while being a good 500lbs lighter. And like the SVT Focus is to the regular ZX3, it'd probably pick up some nice visual accents as well (trim, interior, wheels). The styling and luxury evaluation isn't quite as cut and dry, but it sounds like it would either match or exceed the M5s performance, which is nothing to laugh at.

This isn't a typical car that Cadillac is known for building, so why dismiss it based soley on the rep of the "old-man plush luxo-cruiser" models in their lineup? If you've seen and driven a CTS and "haaated it" (*two snaps*) then thats a different matter...

I like some of the Caddy's out there but this one is Fugly i have been in one and and looked at it top to bottom it's fugly and underpowered for the price,Cheapo Gm interior like usual,Fugly and my bro hates it to.It may handle well but that's it.Not bashing Gm like i suaklly do b/c my dad owned 2 GM cars and will never go back.We own a Ford and it's the best most reliable car my dad ever owned next to his 76 Dodge Charger. The CTS is not my type of car,I will take a Lincoln LS over that anyday

Well, no doubt the styling is polorizing. You either hate it or love it. Oddly, to me the styling looks like a 40-50s interpretation of the future. Hard to argue its not bold and fresh though. Actually reminds me of the Aprilia Futura, which also took some getting used to from a styling standpoint but ended up being a GREAT ST performer.

Would look kinda neat to have those two parked next to each other. I thought the interior was very comfy (nice seats) and looked pretty decked out luxo wise. I only know M3s for comparison (haven't sat in a M5 to compare). The power argument kindof goes out the window if the CTSi is getting over 400hp and 400ftlbs though.

Let's face it, the focus is a bit odd looking in ZX3 guise, but it also hadles very well. That it shares in common with the CTS. Embrace quirkiness. The world would be very boring if everyone looked the same. Oh and I don't care if Yugo built the car, if it's good, I'm interested. Brand loyalty is stupid.

Dam, that is way to much cash. If I wanted to spend $50k on a car it sure as hell wouldn't be a hot rod Caddy.
I can think that the WRX STi will easily run with it from the factory, then throw $20k of mods at the STi and say good bye to about anything ever driven on the road.
Still, for a Caddy, I think that the styling and performance of the CTS are on the right track. It ain't a sofa driving down the streets any longer.
Cheers.
