Default Best way to sell a car

Ok I have kept my old car for too long now so now I absolutely have to sell it. What is going to be the best way to sell it, I know that there are the newspaper ads, but do these really work? Any help would be much appreciated.

I've sold three cars online using classifieds2000.com. But, the last one I sold was over two years ago. I don't know how well it works anymore. Back then, the ads (with pic) were free and there were no fees. I don't know what its like now but all I can say is it worked for me.

I second classifieds2000 - free and it DOES work. Someone 3 states away drove all the way up to buy my 4Runner a few years back. If it was me, I'd search Yahoo for every free ad listing service and place a bunch of ads. Get as much exposure as possible.

I've tried all of these without sucess:
eBay
Newspaper
Yahoo Auctions
cars.com
autotrader.com
Autotrader (the actual paper)
Yahoo classifieds
various message boards.

On 3 out of the last four cars I've sold, I've ended up trading the car in. On of them (2000 Civic DX hatchback) I ended up selling to a friend. The other I did sell on yahoo classifieds, but it was a ’79 Civic and I only wanted $400 and I got it.

I hate selling cars – I've had no luck with it. I haven't tried the above mentioned website, though.

Good luck – oh, what kind of car are you selling?

Private sellers often have unrealistically high expectations of what there car is actually worth. Compare values of other cars in the same condition with similar milage, be honest with yourself set a fair price and it should "move" quicker.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I've got you beat on that one. I sold a '70 Jeep to someone in San Diego. I lowered the price because it was costing me $ to store it. I tried to explain before he flew out just how bad the rust was but he had no comprehension of what 30 Pennsylvania winters can do to a vehicle. Needless to say, he was surprised how little was left of the floor. But he had already wired me the money and it made the trip from PA to Californa without a problem. Who would have thought that a $600 vehicle could make that trip?

Anyway, just curious if anybody has found some good automotive classifieds sites. I cannot find anything close to what classifieds2000 was just a few years ago.

autotrader is pretty good, but it isn't free (although you can run your ad until it sells)

Autotrader is the ONLY thing that has worked for me. I have sold my last two cars on autotrader. My GTI sold 2 HOURS after I placed the ad online. The guy had the car shipped from Denver to his home in Washington State. They aren't cheap, but I believe they have the best exposure on the web.

Online ads are the best IMO, because you can advertise to a national audience. You'd be surprised how many people are willing to drive great distances for a car. Granted, people prolly won't drive 1,000 miles for a 1,000 dollar car, but if the vehicle has some value, you can expect to get some out of the area inquiries on it.

Out of all the calls I got on the GTI, I would say 75% were out of state. Even on my MR2 (which sold for $1400,) I received numerous out of state inquiries.

My advice would be to try the cheapest method first. Classifieds 2000 is a good deal, but has somewhat limited exposure. Give it a couple weeks...if nothing happens, then move to one of the pay services like autotrader.

I've used local newspapers and the Auto Trader with some success, I'd say close to 75%. I've had over 19 cars in my life so that's alot of experience selling cars this way. My last two cars sold with simple signs in the window.

Price is a big factor, if you want to try and sell the car yourself ( meaning in person ) list it without price. Most people scan ads by price these days.

Also, find a safe and legal place to park it and "floor" it on a corner somewhere.
