I guess you could just treat it like if the traffic lights fail. You stop at the intersection and yield to other traffic.

Well, since the thread is back, I will say that I live in the Chicago area and have frequently come across uncontrolled 4-way intersections. Most (if not all) of these have existed in residential communities.

I've always taken the "whoever is going straight has the right of way" take, and if two vehicles are coming at perpendicular paths, the person who gets there first has right of way. If both of these vehicles are approaching the intersection at the same time, usually one car will adjust their speed to either get through the intersection first, or allow the other vehicle to clear first.

As always, I'd rather not crash than say "I was right" so I always pay close attention in case the other people aren't.

So, the dude who so vehemently stated he's driven all over and not encountered an uncontrolled intersection must not get out in his own town much.

There's a few in the Lansing area, though the ones I knew about were recently given stop signs. Basically, you treat them like a 4-way stop, but with the ability to roll through if there is not conflicting traffic. Call it a 4-way Yield (there's a sign that's getting rare to find - they're all being swapped out for stop signs).

Seriously, though, anyone who can't navigate through one of these without causing an accident shouldn't be on the road.

Wouldn't you treat it like a stop light thats out? 4 way stop rules apply?

^ Zoomer answered it already.

I assume you're talking about what I said 3 years ago.

And unless we're talking about the intersection between two suburban cul-de-sacs, with average daily traffic counts of oh say 10, I've still never seen an uncontrolled intersection in Chicago. If you know of it, let me know. After thinking about it (for 3 years, obviously), I have seen some on country roads I suppose, where there's 5 miles of straight blacktop and no houses in any direction...probably seen some out there and never really thought about it, since there's never any traffic anyway.

The whole thing seems like a pretty silly concept to me. If people can't be trusted to stop at stop signs, how the hell can we trust them to stop when there is no sign at all? lol

if 4-way intersections exist without any sinage... I'd like to see it.

In the city I'm originally from, over half the intersections are uncontrolled. All traffic just has to yield to the right. It's pretty straightforward, it's basically a 4-way yield but without spending money on pointless signs.
