Usually they're out to test mechanical systems, and see how the prototype is running. A lot of work needs to be done before a new car is brought to market, and this is one of the ways they figure out what they need to improve.

FYI 30% of your sales /= "enthusiast" and "enthusiast" pay retail.
So your telling me 30% of people who buy 2004 Buick Centurys are enthusiast? I keed I keed.

I kinda have to agree that most people here wouldn't blink at considering not getting a focus. I say that because of the large percentage of Mazda3 6 and Fusion, and mustang ect that I see on this forum. It seems muddier than ever at G2G's as well. Most of the poeple here dont seem THAT dedicated to the focus. But I do understand people lives change and so do their needs. Focus isnt forever and it isnt for every one, But I like mine

hes referring to fleet sales.... the 30% number of hatchbacks are probably mostly retail sales as opposed to factory fleet sales. Have you ever seen a Focus hatchback rental car?
they make more money on retail sales, which means that while they sell more sedans, they make hardly anything on the total of them since they're getting less per car...

Look ma, a baby fusion.

I have also heard that the hatchback is dead, and the C1 platform is slated for 2010.

Chances are, you won't see me driving around the chrome-grilled Focus coupe'. Nope, I will look someplace else.

MazdaSpeed 3 or Mini Cooper S perhaps?

That's because the concept has gotten further and further away from what initially brought us to the vehicle.

It's pretty self evident that Ford simply has no inclination to put resources into the hatch, for americans anyway....which given the current energy crisis....is retarded.

Ford should have 4 models of the hatch....

2 engine choices....and be as euro as can be inside and out......

Diesel....base model....120 hp 180 lbs trq
Diesel....sport model....140hp 270 lbs trq

Gas........base model 120 hp 120 lbs trq
Gas........Rs Model 250 hp 250 lbs trq

I don't know....It cant hurt Ford any worse to listen us for a change....afterall, we are their customers.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

Why can't anyone understand that Focaljet is an incredibly poor representation of the American car market, for better or worse.

Get over yourselves. I would bet that less than 15% of you that bitch and moan about the U.S. not getting this or that would EVER buy it, should it come here, whatever "it" is. Fact. And I don't want to hear rebuttals from like 5 people that "would". Okay, fine. You proved my point, 5 people. Get over yourselves.

Bottom line is that there are no problems with being critical of the mass market and desiring alternate models. The idea that anybody could be a Ford Focus "enthusiast" is foreign to the vast majority. Is that a bad thing? No.

Bull****!

I'd venture to say that better then 50% of the people who visit here got their Focus with some sort of deal on it, which was a big reason why people bought it.

As for your 30% of the market just disappearing because there is no hatchback..that's total bunk. There no saying that people won't get the coupe instead, since most likely it will be the cheap version of the car much like the hatchback. If anything I expect sales to be a wash with the loss of the hatch, and if anything it might actually grow since coupes are more popular with the general public and not just Focaljet. If anything, Ford would be smart to offer both verisons, but I don't think that wouldn't be cost effective.

I know, it just gets tiresome, we've had these conversations since before the SVT came out. I was a bit inebriated and got a little rowdy last night with that post

At least send me a bottle.

It does get old, but it is sort of.... part of the FJ "culture", you know? If we averaged out all the car forums in the world, we'd probably have a better picture of how things really are... at least for the enthusiast.

Only response I'm making on this thread:

Ford killed the Focus for me personally in 2004.

That's it. Finito. End of story.

The reason I saved an extra $4,000 and bought a Focus over a Cavalier or Neon was because it was something you couldn't get from another company. It was the idea that I was different from everybody else (yet not). Think about it, how many cars looked like the North American Focus in 2000? The Mercury Cougar?

The new version, it's just another car now. If you look back on my posting history, you can see a direct relation with the number of posts to year. My Focus is almost 7 years old now and I will be replacing it in under two years. The only remotely appealing vehicle that Ford has is the Fusion.

I know, maybe I'll go buy a $23,000 Jetta that is 75% German. Seems to be the cheapest I can get for a truely european vehicle. Maybe not everyone is thinking like me, but if 5% of Focus owners think the same, that's a lot of people and a lot of money you just screwed yourself out of.

I agree completely! Ford stopped making the Focus in 04, now they make another econobox. It might as well just be a neon with a ford oval on the front, simple bland, transportation. Boring looks, boring dash, boring performance, boring hubcaps, just plain boring.

I like how the ZX3 comes with hubcaps with fake lugnuts on it! How did the car sink so low?

I bought my Focus brand new after I was a member on here. Just because I liked the car and its performace and utility mix.
I can garantee you that I will not get a coupe instead of a hatch. What a turn in the wrong direction that would be. Why would someone get a coupe that is hard for the back seat people to get out of, has no rear headroom, and cant fit anything large in the trunk when they are used to a huge hatchback with its museum in the back.
Now of course I am only speaking for me, but I KNOW that there are plenty others that will agree. Coupe is a downgrade from the hatch.

I guess Ford can't please everyone. I think many people are denial when it comes to the Focus...its just another ****ing car with small group of "enthusiast's" (who mostly bought the car because it was cheap and have zero loyalty to it, since they have the attention span of a nat) that don't mean jack-squat to Ford in the grand scheme of things. If you don't like move on to something else. Don't make it out like its the end of your little world. Its just 2-3K lbs of Metal that gets where you goto.

Flame away
Unfortunately, this is how Ford execs actually think.

While you are correct from my perspective regarding how great a hatch is you have to remember that for some odd reason AMERICANS DON"T LIKE HATCHES! Or wagons for that matter.

I'm with Silfox here, I use my hatch on a regular basis for gigs and stuff, and in my recent car shopping expeditions, I can't even consider a coupe, because as soon as I get in it I immediately say "how much room does this have in back?" and watch the salespeople stammer and make up BS about me being able to get more room in the back of an '06 Tiburon than my ZX3 Ford started to kill it for me when they half-assed a "design upgrade" on all models, and now they've completely taken me away from being a Focus driver

I'll still continue to post here because I love the environment and the people I've met, but there's other car companies out there who'll give me a compact hatch that gets 30+ MPG
