well honestally do you want to lock this thread, just so someone else can post another slighlty different one bitching about the new focus? might as well keep it all in one place, good or bad. Anyway i think i need to see what euro parts i can sorce for my MK1 focus. I guess i will either be modding it to 100% e spec, or i will be buying a car from another company if i decided to actually buy something else. (like A3) after having seen the design, and gotten "used" to it I am still not a huge fan. Since it is on the same platform i doubt it will drive all that different than the existing one. Ford may have a market basis for this car, but is is NOT the several hundred thousand people who bought the MK1 focus. The question is if they can gain more new customers with this route than they have lost by basically abandoning what they were origonally going for with this car.

Okay, so, I went to the Washington Auto Show today. It was pretty disappointing (like 3 concept cars total), but I did get a look at the '08 Focus. In person, it is one of the ugliest cars I've ever seen. Its like the retarded cousin of a Saturn ION and a Toyota Echo. That's my take.

ok I think the focus has offically become the presses example of what is wrong with ford, and there "american vs euro" products. It's NOT just FJ screaming about it any more and bringing it up every chance they can.
in THIS talk about the Saturn/opel Sky/GT they brought up the FOCUS again. it seams like EVERY dam artical you read about american/euro brands where they sell cars in both markets, the focus comes up. By 2010 i don't think ford will have to do ANY changed to a e-spec focus. The general population will be conditioned to believe the E spec focus is the end all of c segmant cars and its arrival here will only be equaled in greatness by the second coming of christ. ALL people here is how "GREAT" ford europe is and how crappy US ford is. At this point i wonder if ford could play off of this marketing buzz. It almost might more sence to launch the "new" focus in europe first, even if it's only by a month, just so people formulate they are beinging over the new euro focus, as apposed to launching it in the states first, where people may think its still the american derived car.

IMO When the 2010 debuts; the press will sing enough praise to cause the general American public to take another look. That is if Ford NA dosent botch it up by "Amero-kan-ize-ing" it.

I too went to the Washington auto show, just got back in fact. Quite sad to say that out of the weird concepts, kias, hyundais, etc; the Focus was the worst looking car on display. I really actually liked it in pictures, but in person, it is simply awful. Very, very sad; but the 2007 they had there was 10 times nicer. On a different note, I loved the Suzuki SX4 and am going to buy one.

The C2 Focus will most definitely be Americanize. Ford N.A. has already said so. Lucky for Ford of Europe, they do not have to Italianize, Latvianize, Finnishize, Norweigianize etc to appeal to each very different market.

which raises the question why ford could not come up with that! it is not THAT different than what they came out with, but it flows much better, and looks more like a "focus"

I can't wait to see the sales numbers when the 08 comes out.
With such negativity in public response, woudn't much more wiser for Ford just to continue producing the current Focus for an additional couple of years with a nicer interior and cosmetic updates (Euro look-alike bumpers and trim upgrades). |

Here's the thing though, you had to change them to make looking at them bearable. Unless it has the F2 parts on it, and is a sedan I still think the facelift front is horrible. On the hatch it was like a giant nose on a bubble, it just looks wierd (and not the good kind of wierd like a Zonda) The 1999 Euro Focus was pretty much perfect. Ford messed up by making a cheap looking front and rear bumpers for the US cars instead of just extending the Euro bumpers but keeping thier lines. They axed the fender mounted sidemarkers to save money then made the hideous grille that the US car came with. Everything Ford US touched were the worst parts about the car, but at least it was bearable since the original design was still there, just marred. This new Focus will not have an aftermarket as far as visual modification thanks to a two year lifespan. What company wants to invest in a platform that died in the delivery room? You'll have about the same aftermarket as the facelift car. They have what, one front bumper? It's going to be a wierd looking thing that will probably sell initiallydue to being new, then rapidly taper off as people start comparing it to the cars everyone else is bringing out. Axing the hatch was simply insane. What % of the total numbers did the hatch make up? Take that number out now. That will be your best case scenario for sales numbers for this thing. Anyone buying a coupe will cross-shop this car with the Cobalt and Pursuit, which look much better. You thin kthey care about the rear suspension not being as good? Then there's the Civic coupe, the Tiburon, etc... which all look much better than this tall skinny collaboration of bad design. So basically, you have the enthusiasts that hate the no hatch malarky, as well as the no engine choice crap. They will look to another manufacturer, or just keep thier cars until something better is released by someone else. The intelligent consumer will see that this car is a pile of hopes and dreams and stay away from it as it has a very short shelf life. Got in a fender bender, well they don't make that part anymore $cha-ching$ |
