somehow i think the "new" ones will still have big incentives to move them off the lot 6 months after this comes out. They will have a msrp of like $15,000, negoitated down to $14,000, plus a $2000 rebate = $13,000, and then towards of they year it will also have 0% financing for 60 months.

I see the 08 as more of a blank slate than anything. It seems that the car will take to visual mods allot better than the 05-07's. The new design works well with allot of the blingy chromed out wheels out there.

No, there is no 2.3 option. Only a 2.0 and a 2.0 PZEV for green states.

while it may sound like Ford is killing the enthusiast part of the focus by doing this....it is all prep for the 2010 focus and its engines lined up for it, which are more than just 2 options.

minimizing costs now with a single engine setup. But the pep will be brought back soon enough

how does this really have an effect on production cost. All the parts and manufacturing for the second engine allready exists. I don't see how offering a 2.3 costs them anything at this point? I would think the premium they could charge for it would more than offset it, and also give the car a little better image.

They should be trying to do everything they can to make this car look better that cost them no large amounts of money.

if they want to streamline things offer trim levels like honda does and have a stripper base, a "standard modle with the options most people want, and a fully loaded trim leve with every option in the car and the 2.3 motor.

this car is a "place holder"...upgraded interior huge, made edgy exterior, will sell for the 2yrs of production

placeholder or not if you can do something to improve the cars image for next to nothing, and have an opportunity to make more profit why wouldn't you? hell they even have options like the varable lighting and sync, so obviously ford is not trying to go after the "cheap stripper" market any more but wants to get some higher end customers.

Thanks.

No, after I posted that up my wife said the nice Ford rep said 2.0E not 2.3. Wishful listening on my part but I could have sworn she said 2.3 but all signs point to just the 2.0 so I am sticking with that.

Sorry for the confusion.

Because originally when this design was being done 3 years ago there was no plan for the next Focus platform to come over, which is the case now. The horse was out of the gate already and nothing could be done to stop it.

Can we at least agree its an improvement (minus losing the hatchback) over the horrid 05 Focus?

If they were to listen the suggestions of the FocalJet majority (aka: mob mentality) they would be selling a Ford Focus ST225. You know how many FocalJetters would actually buy said car? Probably just as many that are going to buy a 2008 American Ford Focus.

so if there was no plans to bring out the next focus platform i would think they were planning on haveing more than 1 motor choice anyway. That makes no sence to me.

Like i said, the chassey and engine bay is the SAME. The parts are allready developed and manufactured to put the 2.3 in THIS car. NO development required. The tooling to do this is ALLREADY in the plant. Why the hell would you drop it. This leaves the focus almost in last place when it comes to HP even for a cheep compact. Hell with the new scions coming out the focus is behind even the xB!

If one of there selling points is "fun to drive" and driving dynamics, americans expect a reasonable amount of horsepower for the car to be "fun to drive" 130hp is just too low for the US as the only motor choice now.

all-new interior + edgy new look = solid sales from common consumer for 2yrs

the only equation that was in fords mind for this, period. This was designed two years ago as a place holder for the revamping/euro invasion. Starting with the Mondeo

And believe me, when the new engines are leaked for the C2, you all will forget about "only having a 2.0"

there is no indication the 2.3l was EVER planned to be in the 08+ Focus .. it is possible Ford wanted to save the $$ of building the "special" 151hp version of the 2.3l ... I do not know why they did not just drop the 160hp 2.3l from the Fusion in there... but that is another story.

And yes. this was supposed to run for full 6 or so years ... without any concrete plans for C2 replacement ... thank Fields this car is around for only 2 years.

And I agree with Chris - this car will appeal to quite a few "common folk" - it will have good mileage, be cheap and stand out in the crowd... we enthusiasts were not thought of when this was approved.

PS: I am just amazed that when in 2004 or so when the ",management" was presented with the option of either building this or importing the C1 and the price was similar, that they were SUCH cheapskates that they approved this over the SYSTEMATIC choice of eliminating an orphaned platform ... it just amazes me that a huge company like this can be so blind to the benefit of SYSTEMS ...

oh well.

I bet much of it had to do with people wanting to protect their jobs and their own little fiefdoms they had within the company. Thats one of the biggest problems with Ford these days. Part of the reason why Focus came over originally is that Ford NA had no plans for a new smaller car to replace the Escort and the Focus came over by default

Yeah...what a COMPLETELY HORRID looking car:

Those 05's are SOOOO ugly...that must be why people hate them so much and they haven't won Focus of the Month yet.

Whatever the front end of the new 2008 Focus has on the 2005 (which isn't much at all from what I've seen) the rear end MORE than makes up for it with a heaping spoonfull of butt****ing ugly!!

It only takes a drop and rims to make the 05 look hot...it would take a LOT more to make the rear end of a 2008 look sporty. To put it this way, The 2005 front end needs some eyeliner and mascara, the rear end of the 2008 needs plastic surgery on the scale of Tara Reids former breasteses.
