Although you have to wonder about an automotive journalist that refers to wheels as "rims".

This is VERY positive.

I am optomistic for the future of the Focus after seeing how Ford responded to the feedback from teh customers!

i really like the look for the '09 SES coupe. let's hope ford gets 2010 done right without the need of a redesign and criticism from the "pundits."

Looks better. The foglights integrated into the bumper are nice, MUCH MUCH better than the 08 look of tacked on fogs.

Black chrome FTW! The headlights look nice now, and the grille isn't overpowering anymore.

Not sold on the rear wing, I think it looks cheesy.

Wheels look great on that. They should have done that a while ago. I bet the 6 spoke SVT wheels would look even better.

Mullally ftw... for listening the last few years to north american enthusiasts' desire to own euro-spec and euro-spec performance Ford cars.

Although this '09 Focus is about the last of the C170 (long live the Original! :-)~) it sure is nice to see "mainstream" america look for it out of fuel price frustration then to pick up on it due to it's bland but safe styling... and then be rewarded in and for their purchase by owning a good car that's fun to drive!

Add to this the fine aftermarket performance vision of companies like FocusSport, and, indeed, the future does not look so grim.

I like the new styling, it kinda takes from the svtf styling, the bumpers and wheels anyway. its great! Its really great that ford responded so well.

oh... and don't don't hold your breath for these cars soon. From what I understand (and this is just a source... but not from inside ford... kinda a friend of a friend) the SEMA cars this year are shipping 2008s but also sending out 2009 body parts for the builders to install themselves.

So I'd say job 1 isn't until Mid to Late October. Even if the full production line isn't rolling... they should be able to get the pre-production cars out in time for SEMA, so I'm guessing the whole MY will be late this year. (to be expected)

looks good, i already liked the 08's to begin with. this shows what the car can be with a little extra thought. i'm glad to hear that Ford is listening to what the focus enthusiast's, and future buyers are wanting.

I guess it's a good change forward. I was expecting something more, but it's good to see it though. Kinda looks hatchback-ish with that top spoiler.

My question is whether Ford will make a last minute decision to use some of these ideas (deleted chrome piece behind the front wheels, revised front bumper, rims and grille) in a "sport" version of the sedan?

Has anyone been able to find an MY09 "sheet" like that found on BON forums and other sites that has the other changes? To be honest, knowing these changes will sway my purchase options.

Looks good, but now it looks toned down. I like the gunmetal look, and the deleted faux side vents is a major improvement. Over all I dont feel burned for getting a 08.

Its funny how getting rid of the vent trim gave the car more of an implied line that flows allong the side of the car. I still wish Ford took the square creases out of the front bumper and handled the flow from the hood to the lower grill differently. I wont know if the 09 will have the same caracter lines on the front that the 08 has with the new bumper, until I see it in person (or if a pic of the front is snapped at 6'-0" A.F.F. )

Its a good attempt, and I'm happy Ford is trying, but something still isn't just right about it, and I really can't put my finger on it.

Huge improvement over the 2008 car! I would not go out and buy one yet, but compared to the 2008 redesign, the 2009 is a step in the right direction. I am happy to see the fake vents gone and the removal of all the chrome. It is a band-aid, but a decent looking one. Overall, the design lacks the visual punch of the orginal 98-04 cars, but they sure did a good job making a quick fix.

****!

Oh well. We need a small car soon, and we'd like another Focus. If it's an 08 w/ an 09 mug on it who cares. We were looking at a Fit, but the local dealers are so creepy and pushy that we said forget it, we'll just go through Allan.

I would like to have a Focus by FOTB tho

I was reading the responces at Auto Blog... They hate it over there. The concensus seems to be that Ford made the car "blander".

OK, I am at work and I finally have a chance to really see the pic's (crappy CRT at home). It appears that Ford softened the creases on the rear bumper (good thing). I dont think the fishmouth lower grill works. It looks upside down to me. The front bumper screams 2004 SVT, while the rest of the front looks uncomplemented. Now the car needs a chin spoiler, allong with a tint and drop. I still like the Dark chrome, and the side of the car still looks 100% better w/o the vents, but the front is wrong.

IMO I will take the 08 over the 09. I like the full oragami design better. Plus I wont look out of place playing the Cash Money Millionairs Greatest Hits from my Zune w/ all of the bling-bling chrome.

See.. I'm just not so sure...

The focus has always been a bit of a polarizing design.. and this just looks like a compromised '08. Props to Ford for listening, but -1 for just blanding down the design.

Ford Marketing to Ford Engineers: "our surveys say that people don't like the chrome grills"

Ford Engineers: "but we have a 5 year supply of these grills, what are we supposed to do?"

Marketing: I dunno... just make it less shiny or something...

Engineering: *spots a can of nightshade* .. I have an idea....

Autoblog's readers seem to hate everything! I don't read people comments anymore on there as they usually don't agree with mine, and always against anything Ford does. Detroit Free Press bloggers are the same way. Besides a complete redesign from the ground up, I don't see too many other ways they could have fixed the 08 Coupe', other than what they did.

Styling aside, which is subjective, most blog commenters have probably never even driven a Focus. And, of those that have, very few have pushed one to its limit to find out exactly how great of a driver's car it is.
