Default How to fill a hatch?!

Here's the deal...

I am wanting to go camping. I would like to see some pics of how you guys pack your hatches full of stuff. I have a Yakima mountain bike rack of the roof.

Thanx

How many people? I have no back seat, but I can stack 4 tires, box of tools, box of safety gear, and a small camping setup just fine. Unforuntely, no pics.

i shouldve taken pix of my hatch on friday, when i was going home from college for the summer. i had my back seat folded down, and i managed to fit a mini-fridge, 26ish inch tv, 2 hampers full of stuff, 2 backpacks, and a bunch of pillows and smaller things. i was really impressed by how much stuff can really fit in there.

In my hatch, I have a 12 inch sub that takes up the entire trunk areas.

With that, I've fit:

-3 bikes (two on the roof, one on the back)
-3 people
-Bags for 3 people for 4 days
-Tools for bikes
-And random crap.

It's a tight squeeze, but the Hatch is AWESOME for people and crap.

also...how do you guys handle wet clothes and such when doing the outdoors thing. I've thought about modifying a plastic container for the roof rack that I can toss dirty things in avoid the mess...any ideas?

Don't.

I get badddd gas mileage with my bikes on the roof (super aero Tarmacs). A container on the roof would suck.

I lost my pics, but have the back seat out with a flat floor I installed and used the Focus as a uhaul when moving each time at UT.

I was so proud of my Tetris-like masterpiece, heh. So if some hater douche tells you the Focus sucks, tell them she does more than that, she deepthroats!

BTW, if you roll up yourself a twin size memory foam mattress topper and throw it in the rear footwell, lay down the seats later and you have yourself a nice bed for your camping trip!

I got camping one weekend every month, and what I do is lay my back seat down. Then I keep all my **** in those big rubbermaid tubs, like the 55gal ones. So in 1 tub I have my tent, ground sheet, and all my supplies like a lantern and air matress. Then I just throw in a cooler, and I'm good to go. I could probably fit that **** just in the hatch w/o folding the seats down, but usually I have fishing gear too.

Totes:

The seatback was still up with this configuration. Two totes in the back with fold up chairs on top of them and misc small stuff in between.

4 wheels/tires on the rear seat with suitcase, bag, and cooler on top.

More small bags and crap in the rear floorboards for easy reach.

I drove 1500 miles home just like this and could still see out the rear window (somewhat).

That's a deer in the back of a focus that I pulled up behind. lol. They're quite roomy.

I'd suggest taking the seat bottom out and folding the seats forward, removing the rear hatch cover. That'll free up a LOT of cargo space. The bike rack was a good move. You can also remove the bike holders from the top and use that to put suitcases on, and get one of the bike racks that goes in the back of the hatch and attaches with nylon straps.

I agree...but...do you want to smell the outdoors for the next month before the car airs out.

...You're camping, right? And you have an issue with smelling the outdoors?

there is a difference between the outdoors and two people who haven't showered in 3 days.

I love playing car-Tetris! I never had a Focus hatch, only a sedan - but I did manage to pack that thing pretty well moving to university residence. By the time I moved out, I was driving a Mazda Protege5, which is the only packed hatch I have photos of:

Recently I've been doing the same with my current Mazda3 (sedan) but again, no pics for your enjoyment.

yea no hatch here just the sedan. I find it is useful to flip up the rear seat cushons, but leave the back of the seats in the normal position. Gives you the most hight for moveing tall items upright, and keeps them from knocking around. You could probabally fit a 42" plasma TV IN the box that way if you can get the box through the door openings. I moved a 37inch LCD out of the box just sitting in the back seat.

Also you can fit 3 medium size rubbermade totes across with the back seat bottom forwar, but the backs up, and they dont block ANY of your rear view that way.
