Default Duratec 18 for the Focus ?

would anyone like the 1.8L version of the duratec in the Focus?

I am just wondering if ford has thought about putting the 1.8 in the focus?

Duratec 1.8

125hp @ 6000rpm
122ft/lbs @4000rpm

economy

would be ~2 mpg higher than the 2.0
1 second slower to 60

the 1.6 Duratec Ti-vct
115hp @ 6000
115ft/lbs @ 4150

Economy would be ~4 mpg better hwy than the 2.0

2 seconds slower to 60 than the 2.0

I think the D18 would do well in the Focus... people are really buying the car for gas mileage, and to them 2 mpg better sounds like a world of difference.

I would rather see the diesel before the 1.8. 2mpg doesn't wow me. Personally, I would love to see the 1.6D, 2.0, and 2.3 as options in all Focuses, in all trim levels.

I think the Duratec 18 would be a great option, but I probably would opt for the largest engine from a personal standpoint.

It does come in the Focus, just not in the US.

Hell you should have seen the look on the Ford guys faces when I showed them a 2.3 Duratec in a Focus.

Here or there?

On Base: $4.49 a Gallon

Off Base: 1.49 Euro per Liter X 3.8L X 1.59 = $11.47 a gallon

yes but if you can get 15-20mpg more out of it, it off sets the higher price.

I would consider the 1.8 as an option in the focus. 2 mpg is alot of improvement, in my opinion. Better yet, a Direct Injection 1.8 Duratec.

41? The Jetta used to do more than that in the past. The Passat always had the low numbers. How much weight have Jettas put on in the recent renditions?

Here is where I get confused. Ford seems to call all engines "Duratec"; but not all actually share architecture. My understanding is the 1.8, 2.0, and 2.3 are basically the same engine; with the differences in displacement a result of minor bore and stroke changes. Is that true; or is the 1.6 a member of the same engine family?

the new jetta weighs close to 3300lbs. thats why the should ahve used a lighter smaller car as their diesel car. the rabbit IMO would have been perfect.

The 1.6 used in the mondeo

1.6Ti-VCT
125hp @ 6300rpm
120ft/bls @ 4100rpm

the change to the 1.8 Duratec could be done quickly and withoput much cost because it is a smaller bore 2.0 Duratec. and until 2004 they were making both in Mexico for export to Europe.

Maybe US carmakers can do some radical thinking, like making cars lighter. Small example. My 99 Ranger had an aluminum hood; my 05 Ranger has a steel hood. The aluminum hood was probably about 25 or 30 lbs lighter. Those kinds of weight savings add up.

the 1.6 was designed for ford in the late 90s by Yamaha. the newest one has VCT on both the exhaust, and intake cams.

Um...yes it does. 41 mpg is ~1/3 better mileage than 30 mpg. $4.79/gallon is not 1/3 more than $3.97/gallon.

Diesel - $0.117/mile
Gasoline - $0.126/mile

I hear that with trucks right now- Superduty buyers- Diesel is like 18% higher than gas here is Ca- but the diesel gets about 50% better mileage

If you account for the cost of depreciation- diesel looks even better

My family owns chevy trucks, but I've seen the same trend with ford and dodge. Gas trucks in the neighborhood of 15 mpg, diesel in the neighborhood of 18 mpg. Not quite 50%. What figures are you seeing, since you deal with it every day?

Default Re: Duratec 18 for the Focus ?

I have the 1.6l Ti-VCT in my 2007 Focus and the 1.6l in my 2002 Focus wagon.
Both engines when mated to a manual tranny are very good, but I really like the way the Ti-VCT performs, much better pull throughout the power band.

For 2008 Ford did not offer the Ti-VCT engine in the Focus, but Ford Europe is saying they will use the 1.6l Ti-VCT in the new Fiesta.

Either 1.6l engines with auto tranny is pretty sluggish in the Focus.

The 2.0TDCi 135@4000/rpm Torque 236@2000 lb/ft in the Focus is a super combo

Brad, You beat me too it. I was just going to post that.

I don't think the 1.8L is need in the Focus. Because Ford is coming out with the Fiesta to fill that range.

What would be better would be a Hybrid Focus.

Where did you get 30mpg from?

the focus gets 35mpg right now, 41 is not 1/3 more than 35mpg, yes VWs use huge f'n engines.

At the price of Diesel fuel and the cars that have it does not make as much sense as it used to.
