Surf vs. Escalade: Surf almost wins when man drives SUV onto beach

Cadillac becomes mired in sand when man drives to shore to watch sunrise.

By SALVADOR HERNANDEZ
The Orange County Register

SAN CLEMENTE – A few minutes longer, and it would have been the priciest surfboard on the beach.

Waves nearly washed away a luxury SUV parked on the beach after the car got stuck in the sand and the rising surf began pounding the car, authorities said.
Waves reached up to the vehicle's mirrors, but when deputies from the Orange County Sheriff's Department arrived at the scene this morning, the driver of the car was refusing to get out of the car and leave behind the 2008 Cadillac Escalade, said Lt. Ted Boyne.

"The waves were about to roll the car over," Boyne said.
Deputies arrived at the beach, near Coronado Lane and Avenida Victoria, just after 5 a.m. after receiving a call of a car stuck in the sand. Deputies arrived to find 32-year-old Payam Sabo inside the new SUV, completely surrounded by salt water.

Deputies convinced Sabo to get out of the car, pointing out to the Irvine resident that the waves appeared to be strong enough to tip the car over, Boyne said.
"Maybe he didn't want to leave his 2008 Cadillac Escalade behind," he said.
Authorities called a heavy-duty tow truck to the scene, about 100 yards north from the pier, to get the car out of the sand.

The car, with a ticket price of more than $56,000, was impounded. Water had damaged the car and it wasn't working.

Sabo told authorities that he had driven the car onto the beach to watch the sunrise, but he realized the car was stuck in the sand when the surf began to rise.

Deputies issued Sabo a citation for driving on the beach, and he was handed a Department of Motor Vehicle license re-examination form, which must be completed within five days, Boyne said.

Although Sabo did not appear to be impaired or intoxicated, he appeared to be confused, Boyne said.

The car was removed just after 6:30 a.m.

I used to go watch the sunrise from the beach. It's so beautiful down there that time of day. Esp. on the OC beaches, since they're south-facing.

Excellent.

That should occur more often; beginning with the type of drivers that leave half of their car in the #1 lane when turning left from a left-turn pocket... those morons need to vastly improve their situational awareness.

I used to live right there up the hill ( 60 second walk to the sand ) and that was my spot. I can't believe that fool drove his SUV into the sand like that.

Wow, 32 and owning a new Cadillac. You'd think the guy was smart and successful. I guess apparently not.

Maybe he borrowed money off his house to purchase a car?
