Report: 70 MPG Ford Fiesta ECOnetic diesel to debut in July

Category: Auto News, Europe, Ford

Ford's U.K. division is set to debut its Fiesta ECOnetic compact car at London Motor Show this July that can achieve an amazing 70 mpg, according to a report by Autocar.

Sources close to the automaker claim that the ultra-efficient car achieves an amazing 100 g/km, which in U.S. cycle is calculated to be roughly 70 mpg. The Fiesta ECOnetic hatchback weighs 50 kg (110 pounds) less than the previous model and will be powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine.

The ECOnetic will be fully constructed at Ford's wind powered plant in Dagenham, Britain. With plans to globalize the Fiesta model starting as early as next year, it is still unclear whether Mulally and company will bring a version of the fuel-sipping hatchback our way in 2011, considering the even higher price for diesel stateside.

Wow, I was ready to post how people would say how useless that is because 70mpg UK is only 60mpg US. But it clearly states thats in US numbers.

Even if that estimate is off, a 60mpg+ Fiesta would be a game changer. Will be interesting to see how it will compared against the next generation of Hybrids.

if the fiesta wasnt coming out in like 3 years, id get one. 3 years is to long. i'll be in the market for another car in 1 year or less.

i cant justify leasing something for 3 years then buying a fiesta. then its just 3 years of wasted money.

Where are the US diesels? MB has one and that's it. The VW is delayed, the Honda is delayed, .....even the Ford and GM truck engines are delayed. 7 out of 10 cars sold in EU are diesel and we get nada...... WE'RE ECONOMICALLY DYING OF POOR MPG CARS HERE and Europe just keeps getting better and better mpg cars.

Where are the conspiricay theorists when you REALLY need them?

well also they pay a lot more for gas than us. so they are even economically hurt by gas prices. so it is needed more there.

once diesel starts getting a better rep here we will see more of them.

Ford has said they will not bring Diesel cars, they believe Ecoboost will work better. So yes there's a good chance we may not get this Fiesta.... shame really. But I guess we'll see. Mulally has been surprising us.

87 octane: $3.69 vs Diesel: $4.62
Thats a 20% price difference!

Have not gotten under 54mpg to date! It runs on 87octane, so 55mpg x 20% = 66mpg diesel equivalent! Bump your tire pressure and put cruise control on 65mph, and peeps get 60mpg with the new dual-sparkplug per head design. 60mpg x 20% = 72 diesel equiv MPG!

Yeah its not a car, but its got oodles of suspension travel, lots of fairing protection, radar detector and GPS w/ supplemental speakers for jammin' tunes, a 52 liter lockable rear trunk and attachable side cases and 70 liter soft-passenger bag (and could even put on a tank bag), so running errands is no problemo. I RARELY see bikes at work, and just parked next to THREE today.

sorry ducman69 but your bike doesn't do well in the rain, especially the hail or snow! so you can boost your tire pressure to as high as you want and pack on all the side cases you want but 4 wheels plus a hatch is better than 2 most times of the year.

but as for the standard fiesta...i think it will have to see 40+mpg by 2010. gas is not going down, that's just a fact so to not achieve 40+mpg for a b segment car would just be retarded. yeah it looks awesome, but let's see some engineering to back up the pretty face.

You drive in hail? And if it started snowing anytime soon in Houston, I'd light up the Al Gore sign and shine it into the clouds.

But neways, yes, a cage is practical to have around for poor weather, group outings, dates, and long trips (I have two and aint sellin em), but you don't have to drive it 24x7, and the 70mpg Fiesta doesn't exist yet and probably won't in America for years, and not many new hatches out now that are $7K after tax and title and can even break 40mpg city/highway mix. I can understand if its asstastic cold for half the year though, otherwise, join the bandwagon!

hey duncman unfortunately hail has become a regular thing here in eastern and northern central mass. but like you said i think it is very unlikely that we (or possibly even europe) will see a 70mpg fiesta by 2011. If it was more practical where I am to drive a bike most of the year I definitely would be. But for now my 2k1 zx3 that makes 33+mpg is going to have to cut it for me.

ah I wish we would get this car here. I want a diesel. Just playing around with my spread sheet. As long as my numbers are correct, if you had two vehicles one diesel getting 70mpg, and the same car with a gas motor getting 50mpg. With gas prices in Belton, MO $3.75 for regular and $4.59 for diesel. The diesel would still save you almost $150 a year. But then it also comes down to vehicle maintenance difference also.

Don't be a fair weather rider. Riding in the rain isn't all that bad. Just pack a rain suit on the bike. Once you do it a couple times it's nothing. I ride my bike from the end of March into sometimes December. You can always add more clothes to stay warm.

If there's no ice I'm game!
