Quote:
After receiving a report earlier today, we've just confirmed the sad news that Phil Hill, the first American to win a Formula One World Drivers Championship, passed away at 10:30 this morning at the age of 81 after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. Hill will be remembered as one of the greatest race car drivers in American history, having won the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Italian Grand Prix, among others.

I just got a phone call from my friend Anton, who's good friends with a certain Mr. Mosier who learned the classic car restoration craft from Phil.

Phil lived locally in Santa Monica and we had been kept abreast of his condition. Although I hadn't heard much in the last week we knew the end was near.

He was a Champion, and loved to drive right up to the end. Last year when Parkinsons had him in it's horrible grip, he could still wheel a car. It was incredible; it was as if he had been cured for those moments behind the wheel.

Rest in peace, Phil Hill.

Had a chance to meet the guy about 12 years ago at Willow Springs, his son was driving in the Ferrari challenge and I tested the cars a few times before the they were shipped to an event. I was complaining about glare and the windshield angle and this dude started talking to me about it. It was Phil.

His son has been by his side and set aside a huge track project to be there for him. Phils name is on the project and I hope to cover it for "Road Trip". Derrick is a class act and a great driver as well.

Very loved man for a ton of reasons

I saw him a couple years ago at Road America, he was quite frail at that time and had to bow out of his autograph sessions.

Very sad to see him go.

Oh No......... :-(

I never met Phil but the recalled events you all post is what it's all about. No one wants to be forgotten, not that Phil could ever hope to be anyway but keep on relating the memories....

I just love his brief bits in the movie Grand Prix, not that he'd want to be remembered for a movie but I see it more often than many 'genuine' Hill appearances. It gives the movie more credibility seeing the real guys like Phil in there.

Phil Hill, Formula 1 world Champion. You left a very worthy legacy Mr. Hill.

It's amazing what he did on the track. And at the age he was in his prime 34. Today's standards you don't see to many in there 30's-40's on top of the world in today's racing world.

Rip Phill!

classic phil is doin the sound for grand prix (also foot cameras) @ monaco. they couldnt do it (actually couldnt get good sound at the time of filming) there, so they had phil do it at riverside on the super long straight, the guy literally mimicked a lap of monaco from memory on a straight. classic

why is it that he is "dead", rather than passed away or something not so harsh sounding...
