Open up your favorite image editing software. I use Paint Shop Pro so I'll use that for my specifics.
Paste the print screen in the program
Select the paint brush option and copy the background color from the forum. 'CTRL Right Click' works in PSP.
Now with your avatar in the editing software, select the 'Color Replacer Tool' and replace the white from the avatar's background with the background color you just copied off the print screen
Now your avatar's background will blend in with the forum.

That's the process I used for mine and it looks a lot better when they blend together.

The only thing I think I would like is something I've seen on other forums. If the avatar fits the file size criteria, and its a hair too big dimensions wise, it will automatically resize it for you.
