I've got an SVO head with a fairly worn cam and all the hardware still installed sitting in the garage. The head has not been checked since coming off of the car. The car ran with it installed although poorly but I think it ran poorly due to some other issues. Off of my 1985 SVO. PM me if your interested.
I already have a mildly ported oval port which will be taking its place. |

Bump with some... updates.
Here are some of the pics i took of the car, after and during the head installation. The old head was warped bad enough where my cam alignment was off. So... rather than spend gobs of cash fixing it, i just ordered a rebuilt one. good news is that now i have an extra cam, spring, rockers, and all valves except one exhaust valve. Also i was helping a friend tint his lights on his SVT focus (i'm a focus guy too remember), and we decided to tint the tails on the XR. Left the backup lights a little lighter, but i think it looks good. Also painted all the trim on the car, because it was... well, it had paint splatter from when my father painted the shed. Nasty looking. 100 times better now. Anyway, enjoy. I'm including some reference pics for ya too. Engine: before - ![]() And now... ![]() ![]() ![]() Head pics of install... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Interior: before... ![]() and now (not done yet) ![]() cover is held on with 3m surebonder spray adhesive. it will not slide. ever. Tail of the car before... ![]() and now ![]() ![]() Once i figure out the timing, i should have her running. Then i have to find out where i can fit this monster FMIC i got... (volvo IC, 23" x 17" core, 29" at inlet, 2.5" inlet / outlet.... 1" thick. ugh. gonna be a squeeze) |

![]() Looks nice so far, hows it running now? Are you upgrading the turbo still? Going to sell me the Vortech for really cheap to pay for this new addiction? ![]() |

not running now. need to figure out timing, which is owning me.
not upgrading turbo yet... going to get a boost control valve (better than the stock setup i guess), and figure out how to fit this FMIC in the car (it's big.) No. the vortech stays. ![]() |

Bump: FYI this car is up and running. AC system is pulled out (much to the dismay of my knuckles, which are a nice, skinned flesh tone). Carbon canister is out. K&N cheapy intake so far is on. Working on sourcing intercooler piping. Just put together the exhaust (stock is ... odd. looks restrictive and small, etc)
So i spent some time under the car measuring, looks like we're gonna go with a 3" from the downpipe (which is 2.5" stock but will be upgraded eventually), so basically downpipe to high flow cat to high flow muffler, then dump in front of the rear wheel. ![]() Intercooler is mocked up (cable tied in place), fits almost perfectly. Need to shim the top a bit. no biggie. I'll get some more pics soon. ![]() |

Why would you ask that? It's called a hobby. Many could ask why mod a Focus. 'Cause we want too. ![]() Anyway, car's awesome man. Can't wait to see pics with the exhaust and intercooler! ![]() |

Sounds great. Keep them coming. What's this car's position? Weekend driver? Once a month driver? |

Right now the car's position is troubleshooting. So far not too many quirks that i expected. Need to get the radiator fan to turn on when the temp comes up. Have to try a few things. Exhaust tidbits will be here monday, should have the stock exhaust cut off afterwords.
And to answer the "why" from back in November: Because i want to. I've wanted this car since i was 13. I learned to drive stick on this car when i was 14. It died when i was 15 and sat for 9 years in my parents back yard. Now she's mine. And she runs. And she will be quick. And most importantly, she's mine, and i can. Goals for this car are weekend cruiser / autoXer. I dont know what my final goal for this car will be. I was thinking either go all out, strip the entire interior, put a cage in, and a single race bucket, a suspension so stiff i'll have back problems (well, more back problems) by 30, and straight pipe exhaust running about 300whp. Or i can go with a lightly modded car with a slightly aggressive suspension that is street legal and quick. We'll see. I'm looking at picking up some BAT springs and koni yellows from another merkster, if they're not already sold. |

Just check peoples lawns on your way to work. They make good fixtures for vines to grow on.
