Default August Focus of the Month: Make a Statement! - Hooked Again

The Competitors

And the winner:

Hooked Again

Quote:
History:

Believe it or not, this started out as a 2000 Windstar Limited minivan, at least that’s what we ordered from the local dealer. Since the dealer didn’t have the guts to tell us we missed the final date for assembly of Windstars and we were in desperate need for a car with air conditioning because our ’88 Accord was on its last legs we went to the dealer to see what we could work out.

As we walked on to the dealership I noticed a brown Focus ZX3 sitting by the front doors. At the time I didn’t care one way or another about the Focus, but the 16” polished rims, roof rack, bike tire tread side moldings and that color really intrigued me. The more I looked at the car the more I liked it, and it came with a bike as well! So we bought it after “test fitting” our family of five. We decided it was to become my car after a year, at which time we would look for a car for my wife…another minivan.

So once we got the car I started looking on-line for information about it and stumbled upon Focaljet.com. I discovered all that could be done to modify it and make it even more unique. My life hasn’t been the same since! I’ve made a ton of new friends and spent an uncounted amount of time and money because of this car. I believed I had gotten over the car addiction but once again became intoxicated with cars and horsepower, thus my screen name…Hooked Again.

After six years and several changes of direction as to how and what I wanted to do with this car, the addiction is still strong. I never thought I would keep the car this long yet I still have more I want to do to it. I love driving it everywhere and have no problem driving long distances. I also have never had a major problem with the car even considering it’s a 2000. I don’t “baby” it but I do take better care of the Kona than our other cars.

I think I’ll keep it another six years!

Congrats! That's one of my favorite front bumpers, and the bronze grids look so good on a dirt brown car

I feel as though I should begin with "This is Paul Harvey...."

Here's the REST of the story.

Dave can build a car from scratch blind folded - he is truly THAT talented. But as newlyweds with little money he found himself working on our cars because he HAD to - and grew to resent it. So I wasn't surprised when he swore he'd never work on another car!! He'd had enough.

Then he bought the Focus. And Hooked Again - yes - that's true.

Now you must know before I tell you this little story that Dave is a WONDERFUL husband and father. You folks know him and know his character as a good guy - it's that way at home too - He just REALLY is a terrific guy. So don't think poorly when I tell you this.....

Our oldest son had moved out so it was just Evan (who at the time was still not even 80 pounds soaking wet holding 50 pound weights) and our Catherine who was in a car seat - obviously not much additional weight. The four of us were in Dave's little car when a young guy in a red Honda pulled up next to us at the signal. Nobody said a thing but suddenly the air was electric!!!! The light turned green and off we went - neck and neck - to the next red light. Stop, wait for green, and off we go again - Honda vs Ford - young vs old - all the world at stake in this race through town. At each signal they traded who arrived first - the Honda would barely get there as we pulled up - but then the next signal we would arrive as the Honda pulled up behind us - neither of them REALLY flat out winning.

Dave just couldn't take it any more and well.... his racing blood just took over and his brain short circuited momentarily. (I'm SURE that's what happened.)

At the next signal he turned to me and well..... are you ready for this??? He says "Honey - please don't misunderstand, but would you mind getting out and waiting here for a minute? I swear I'll be right back!!!"

And he's still alive.

If all you can think of is "what kind of honda was it?", then you missed the WHOLE point of the story....

It was made in Spain and sold by Kurtz Kustomz Motorsports. Not an exact replica of the 2000 WRC wing, but a nice representation. I saw another vendor selling one quite similar but can't remember who it is. As for cost, I have never added it up...too afraid to really find out how much. I look at ZonaKona's and think..."What the f*** have I done!"

Thanks everyone for all the compliments and the votes! I really am blown away by the attention.

Amazing car! Its perfectly put together in everyway. Good to see a person who knows how parts should be put together.

Is your CarbonFX hood tinted at all, or is that the way the yellow kevlar hood looks? It matches really freaking well, if so.

Very clean Kona.

"I also have never had a major problem with the car even considering it’s a 2000."

My 2000 ran like a champ besides a couple TSBs. It is what inspired me to get into my current paperweight.
