I've been working like crazy this winter out in the cold to get as much done as I could before the season starts. Here is my progress so far. The tubing for the rollcage is being ordered next week so that project is under way. It's not even close to finished but you'll get the idea from the pictures and captions.....
Some shots of where the project is at right now http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/100_0285.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/100_0248.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/100_0249.jpg The shifter base riser I built. Loved the feel of the shifter since I got it years ago, but thought it was a bit short.... so it was fabrication time http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/100_0263.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/100_0262.jpg The hatch as it sits now. Soon will be cleaned up and have bars running every which way. The strut bar back there is a piece that I've custom made out of 1.5" stainless steel. It's for sale by the way... http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/100_0261.jpg Here you can see where I pulled all the wiring that runs along the floor from each side of the car to the other between the shifter and the e-brake and tucked it up in the same wire loom behind the dash. Now there will be absolutly no nasty wire mess in the car...everything will be hidden behind the dash. Whats left of the dash anyways http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/100_0285.jpg This is where I have the gauges for now. They aren't attached yet, I'm just trying to decide if I like them there. Any and all opinions/ideas welcome http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/100_0284.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/100_0280.jpg Sunroof went bye bye! Now just have to decide how I'm gonna plug the hole http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/100_0294.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/100_0295.jpg Here is the custom front strut bar I made out of 1.25" stainless steel tubing and brackets. No bends, no flex! Very stiff http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/100_0288.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/100_0289.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/100_0290.jpg I pulled all the unnecessary wires/harness from the car that aren't needed anymore. This includes the radio, heater, AC, hatch release, power lock, speaker, power mirror, rear wiper, rear defrost etc. etc.. So if you're interested in what this mess looks like, here ya go http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/100_0293.jpg Some shots of whats left of the dash and my cleaned up wire job. The wires you see hanging down are for the custom toggle switches I'm putting in the dash to control the windows. This was a major PITA since I had to disect the quick connect harness that goes from the car into the door. As of now there are only 2 wires going from the door into the cabin... the yellow "up" wire and the white "down" wire to control the window. Everything else from that harness has been removed. The other wires that are laying on the pass. side floor are the harnesses for the Defi' gauges so those will be gone when the project is finished. Just a warning... if you're going to tackel this wire nightmare just be very patient and go SLOOOOOWWWW. Chase every wire from it's source to what it opperates, and then decide if it's necessary for the goal at hand. http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/100_0268.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/100_0270.jpg Some outside shots of the beast. Still pretty simple on the exterior. Will be ordering a Seibon CF hood once the tax returns arrive. I also pulled the hood latch, cable and handle completely from the car since I removed the lower dash piece below the steering wheel. I wont be using the factory latch for the CF hood, just a set of hood pins. Fancy tape job on the headlights. I know, I know... not necessary. Just got bored and saw it done to an RSX circuit spec car and thought it looked mean ![]() http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/100_0253.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/100_0251.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/100_0300.jpg The Rota's on the front...soon to have massive SVT rotors behind them http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...s/100_0297.jpg Tell me what you all think Please Read the Rules: Max image size is 800x600 - Moderator

Here is a couple engine shots. The Odyssey PC680 isn't in the car right now, but it sits on the driver side inner fender where the stock battery tray bolts are. I made a custom tray with a billet tie down that I'll have to get a picture of soon.

I really want a cheap focus that I can do that to. I just don't want to do it to either of the Foci I have right now.

Have you thought about weighing all the parts and wiring you pulled out of it?
Looks like it'll be fun when you finish.

The main reason I pulled all the necessary wires was simply to clean up the car and make it easier to work on. The weight savings was just a bonus. I fully plan on weighing the car before the cage is put in so I can enjoy the fruits of my labor if only for a few days

I'm not sure about rules and regs for your class, but for the sunroof you could just cut some plexiglass (lexan if you want the good stuff), make some lightweight trim brackets from just flat-stock aluminum and then just use some caulking to seal it up. Heck you could even paint it white if you wanted so light won't come through.
Oh, and the car....LOOKS LIKE FUN!!!

I have an idea for the sunroof hole. Pretty simple too, at leat to me it is, but I'm do bodywork, so it's not hard for me.
Get a piece of sheetmetal, cut it to fit the sunroof hole. Get you some 3M panel bond adhesive 81-15, the stuff is kinda pricey, about $40 a tube, but very good stuff, no shrinkage like some panel bond adhesives, and it will bond ANY 2 materials together. Use the 81-15 to secure the sheetmetal in place, then a little body filler to smooth it out, prime, and paint. I'd suggest cutting the sheetmetal maybe like 1/8 inch smaller than the hole so it kinda sits down into the cutout that is already there for the sunroof, and the panel adhesive can do it's job, and the filler can be built up properly and sanded smooth. If you're really careful, you might be able to put a few tack welds on the "plug" to hold it in place while you applythe panel bond adhesive. And now, upon a second look, I'd saycut the sheetmetal as close to the hole size as possible for a tight fit, since the hole is cut flush all the way around. I wish I lived closer to you, I'd come help you with pluggin that hole. Shouldn't be too hard, but like I said, I do bodywork, so this is easy to me. Might not be as easy for an untrained person. Or, you could turn the sunroof cutout into a roof hatch, make a piece out of some sheetmetal with some bracing on the backside, hinge it, and have a little latch on the inside to keep it from popping up when the car is running.

^^^ Heh, I won. Your idea is definitely a much more permanent and finished option though. The $40 for a tube of glue makes me cringe, but just like anything you get what you pay for.

Rules require that the plug must be of like material as the roof so plexi/lexan is out of the question. I may just make a panel out of aluminum, seal and rivit it to the roof. It's the cheapest way by far and doesn't look to bad when it's done right. And I'll most likely paint it black. What do you think a body shop will charge to weld in a panel and blend everything??

I'd say just try welding a piece in there, but the sheetmetal is SO damn thin on cars today, you as much as think about welding it, and it warps. That's why I suggested a couple tack welds to hold it in place while you use another type of adhesive. You could always make it a vent for some fresh airflow into the car.

That is sweet. How long did it take to take out all of the wire and weigh it by itself I need to know before I tackle that job.
Have you seen where I put my gauges, I really like them there on top of the airbag cover. How much did the shifter risers cost? I would really like a set like that.
