No updated pics...next week for sure. This weekend I mounted up the trubendz and followed Omnifocus down the Pacific Coast Highway. Awesome drive!!!
Last night I finished my oil cooler setup and am very happy with it. I've got about 6 quarts of oil capacity, and the cooler and 5W30 synthetic should keep the engine happy ![]()

I'll pull this up from pg 5. Here's a pic from Infineon
![]() I won't be updating this thread with action shots for a little bit. I managed to dump 3 quarts out of my oil cooler setup about 10 minutes into my last session of the weekend. Unfortunately, I believe that caused a spun bearing. I am in the process of sourcing a used engine to get the DuraMonster back where she belongs.

Holy EPIC background on that first set of pictures.
Sweet car, and even sweeter terrain.

It was not the FocusSport cooler, but this could very well happen to theirs as well. I was already starting to get in touch with Goodridge for some lines, but got anxious. My car needed an oil change, so I did it all at once. It is actually the radiator from a zetec B&M kit with the Mocal adapter from the FS kit. I don't believe the oil came from the crimp clamps. I believe the brass threads that seal to the radiator leaked (more like exploded). I had sealed it with teflon tape, but probably should have used pipe dope. I had oil from headlight to headlight, and it even covered the underside of the hood. I haven't had enough time to tear into it yet.

Didn't the car already have a FS CAI on it?

No, that intake went for sale on FocalJet a long time ago... Then it had a CARB-legal Cosworth to pass emissions testing... and THAT intake went onto the black Duratec... So Brad got low-miles stock parts with the car. ![]()

Um...I would expect better of you Engine oil heat has much more to do with engine revs than horsepower. An NA engine can (and usually does) spend more time in the upper revs than a boosted car. It is not uncommon to see oil temps in the 260 degree F range. I am running 5W30 instead of the recommended 5W20 which helps maintain lubricity at higher temperatures, but just like brake pads, the oil prefers to be at a desired temperature (much lower than 260). Sheer force is a function of bearing clearance, journal diameters, and operating speed. With modern engines and machining practices, bearing clearances are more critical and much tighter. This increases the stress on the fluid, and therefore the heat that is produced by friction. Where does that heat go? I don't have a chart handy for the difference between 5W20 and 5W30, but I'll use 10W30 as an example. As oil temperature increases from about 180 degrees F to 250 degrees F (82C to 121C) absolute viscosity changes from 0.02 to .008 Newton-seconds/square meter, or about 60% decrease in viscosity.

[quote=brads03zx3]Um...I would expect better of you
[quote]I understand all that (in less exact details of course) but seeing 2 cars blow oil all over the track, one of which now needs a new engine because of it, in a course of 2 track days due to a mishap with an oil cooler. Coincidence: almost surely, but still. Now your engine is gone, Chads could have been if he didnt react so quickly, plus the other cars on track were in danger due to the spill. (I saw one car almost go off track and another spun way off because of the oil) And the rev range deal I can agree with but also our engines dont have a red-hot turbine of death that the oil flows through so it probably is still cooler. ![]()

My mishap was my own fault...I installed the cooler with sub-par equipment. I should have installed some stainless lines and correctly sealed the threads. I really don't know exactly when I spilled oil. I do know I continued to limp the car around 1/2 lap after I lost power (and after harm was done to the engine). I never got a low oil pressure light either.

Just to let you know Brad. In the past with a 4.06 gear and RA1s 205/40x17 tires in our Spec Focus Race Cars will be in 5th gear at Willow Springs going into Turn 9 and down the main straight. We might not be able to now with the 215/45x17 R888s. If not, I'm sure we'll be close enough to just bounce if off the Rev limiter some to save that shift.
At Cal-Speedway we will be in 5th on the oval going into NASCAR 1, but it seems to die some when you're scrubing speed on the oval. No need for our cars to use 5th at Buttonwillow. If I had an option to change to a 4.06 gear I would. There was a reason why we don't allow the 2.3L SF cars with the 4.06 gear. We wanted to slow them down some.

Excellent info Ted. Thanks. That's pretty much exactly what I was expecting. A couple differences, I plan to have more than 160 whp, more cornering grip, shorter tires, and higher rev limit than a spec focus when all is said and done.
I probably will end up going with 4.06. I have a long time before that decision is gonna be made.

What's the difference between the '03-'04 setup, and the later ST setup?

A plastic valve cover, a different fuel rail with a different fuel pressure transducer, and different pinouts on a few of the sensors.

Thanks to a couple NorCal friends and my dad, we were able to knock out a huge chunk of the work a couple weekends ago. I'll be putting a few more hours into the project this coming weekend.
