Nice progress!

I love reading you guys' project threads, because they always entail on some level something I've entertained doing or have wanted to undertake at some point in time...

Keep up the good work!

That is looking gorgeous. Very jealous. Always wanted to tear into my daytona like that.

What are your thoughts on the twin cam Lotus designed head that they used on a few cars. Granted I bet parts would be tougher to source, but out of the box those cars...screamed.

The Lotus head is great from a flow-standpoint, it just has to be treated carefully due to being rare and fragile. The original heads had a recall involving the steel plugs that would cause some sort of cracking, which I believe was remedied with aluminum plugs.

One popular thing to do these days is to modify a DOHC Neon head to bolt onto a 2.2L or 2.5L... It isn't a bolt-on deal, but they flow about as well as the Lotus head and parts are much more common.

I chose to go with the old-school SOHC path to help reduce that amount of custom work in the engine bay, but the DOHC cars definitely kick some ass.

Yeah, we missed having you around! Next up is Labor Day weekend... August 30th, 31st, and September 1st.

On another note, we used the e-brake for the first time while moving the car Tuesday and discovered that the lever action is a bit more um... efficient than before. One click with little force equals instant rear lock.

I'm going to shorten the handle and adjust out to about three clicks ... I never thought I'd see an e-brake that works TOO well!

Have you found a solution to an interesting SAI/camber issue?

I'm going to wait until the engine is installed to figure that one out so it is sitting at the right angle.

There are two ways to go: Modify the knuckle or modify the strut. I'm actually leaning toward filling the upper hole in the knuckle and redrilling it so it matches the angle of an L-body knuckle. I had a daydream about how to accomplish that safely today.

A few updates for the curious:

My camera is missing with the previous weekend's progress, but once I find it, I'll step back to the carpet install and other work.

The dork readies the welder. See the bracket/reinforcement down on the core support? Some nice fellow ground off the welds holding it onto a factory turbo car. While I could have made my own, it is nice to have a factory reinforcement to beef up the non-turbo car.

Bzzzzzzzt:

The E-brake handle is too long with the new cable shifter setup, so here is part of the shortening process. We cut 2" from the handle and button release bar and welded them back together.

Shortened and painted release bar:

E-brake handle ready to weld:

Bzzzzzzt:

New water and oil lines for turbo:

Setting it down on the ground to bolt up the flywheel/pp/transaxle:

Zee Flyveel:

Transaxle bolted up, brackets and starter attached:

Weee!

Closer.....

Bolted in!

If only I weren't so concerned with keeping at least one vehicle reliable, the Taco would be turbo'd in a heartbeat.

The FRAM is intentional. It only needs to last about 100 miles.

WOOO! As of a few minutes ago, the clutch pedal works and the shifter cables shift. Gotta love taking twice as long doing a two person job by yourself.
