Well, I put in Redline D4 ATF, and the car does seem to shift smoother. It is most noticeable on quick downshifts and when cool. I did not use the friction modifier, as Redline says it product does not require it.
use in both manual and automatic trannies, while the regular ATF is not. MTL, I believe is not a Mercon fluid, as specified by Ford.
I hope the guys at Redline don't get pissed at me for stealing stuff off their website, but I am a big fan so here is what they have to say:
Red Line MTL may be used in transmissions which recommend 70W, 75W, 80W, or 85W GL-4 gear oils, or SAE 30 or 5W/10W30 motor oils. If a 90W GL-4 or SAE 40, 10W40, or 15W40 is required, MT-90 may be used. If the transmission or transaxle requires an SAE 90 GL-5 gear oil, then Red Line 75W90NS or 75W140NS Gear Oil may be used. In transmissions which recommend Dexron or Mercon fluids we recommend our D4 ATF which is very similar to the MTL, being a GL-4 Gear Oil also. The D4 ATF will provide better low-temperature shiftability, and the MTL would provide better wear protection for racing use.
As for the MTX-75 being a POS, don't start. It has a reputation for strength and longevity in Europe (where it has been used for quite a while) and if you are willing to sacrifice a little bit on the noise front, it will most likely provide years of service. Fluid can indeed affect shifting action, and while the MTX-75 may have some issues and not be perfect, I think calling it a POS is unfair. It is very similar to a Getrag box in its operation and idiosyncries. You will see what I mean when the SVT comes out with it's Getrag box.
