Default Oil Filter Info

As I was unable to get any sense out of Ford or the Ford dealer, I contact Fram and asked them what the difference was between their equivalent of the FL2005 and FL400s.
It appears that the FL2005 or equivalent is the only oil filter that should be used on the 2.0 liter Zetec engine.
This was the information that Fram supplied.

To confirm, the PH3600 is the Fram oil filter equivalent to the Motorcraft
part number FL400S. However, according to our application data, the PH3600
is the recommended Fram oil filter for the 2001 Ford Focus 2.0L 8V SOHC
engine with the eighth digit VIN code of (P). The PH8316 is the recommended
Fram oil filter for the 2001 Ford Focus 2.0L 16V DOHC Zetec engine with the
eighth digit VIN code of (3).

Externally, the PH3600 and the PH8316 are similar. However, internally they
are different. Fram filters meet or exceed the requirements of the original
equipment filter designed for a specific engine. Our filter applications
follow the recommendations of the vehicle manufacturer for form, fit, and
function. The PH3600 has been a standard Fram filter used on various Ford
applications including the 2001 Ford Focus with the 2.0L SOHC engine.
However, with the introduction of the Ford 2.0L (German built) 12V DOHC
Zetec engine, a new filter was needed to meet the requirements of that
engine. Both filters are rated at 10 micron, have the same 3/4"-16 thread
size and anti drain back valve requirements, and they are comparable in
length and outside diameter. The difference is that the PH3600 meets a
burst pressure requirement of 200 PSI and the PH8316 meets a burst pressure
requirement of 265 PSI. Further, internal relief pressure by-pass valve
requirements are different. The PH3600 has a 12 PSI rating and the PH8316
has a 14 PSI rating. The PH8316 also has an anti siphon valve to meet the
requirements of the specific Ford original equipment filter used on the 2.0L
DOHC Zetec engine.

The PH8316 is the recommendation that Fram stands behind and endorses as the
filter application for the 2001 Ford Focus 2.0L 16V DOHC engine. While both
filters will spin on to either engine, they are not considered to be
interchangeable due to their internal differences. As a professional
courtesy, please be advised that the use of any Fram filter installed beyond
the recommendations of the current Fram application catalog will void any
warranty, explicit or implied, on the part of Fram filters. No liability
should be attributed to Fram for the misuse or misapplication of its
products.

Step One,
Don't use a FRAM Filter...
Step Two,
Talk to your dealer. There was a thread about this sometime back, and it was determined that the "prescribed dealer-replacement filter" was OK, even though it conflicted w/ the Owner's Manual.
Personally, I recommend the Mobil One, or k&n HP-2009 filter for the 2.0 liter Zetec(16v).(Motorcraft's OK too... )

Well great! Now that means that I have to pay attention to them when they are changing my oil! Oh well I do any way, but now I will pay closer attention to make sure it is the right filter.

Typically very well in independent tests. The new ones have silicone anti-drainback valves which will not harden with time and heat. Look through the bottom of the filter and if there is a red disk, you have the new design.
