Default Big Bang when shifting hard.

I have a 2001 ZX3 5speed and when I do a burn out or shift into second hard it makes like a bang or a klunk and it sounds like the trans is going to blow up or something, the one I test drove before I got mine did the same thing. Is it the trans or the moter mount? the car only has 4200k on it if it matters.

It's probably the engine and transmissions banging around when the wheels abruptly grab.

Not a good sound. I would suggest avoiding all out burn outs on dry pavement. And being a little gentler with your clutch foot when shifting.

I can't tell you which it is based on the information however, the best way to tell the difference is to be sure the parking brake is securely applied; then, with the engine running and in 1st gear, let out the clutch till it begins to engage. If it is the motor mount you will hear the clunk and an observer (standing BESIDE the car) will see the engine jump if it is, in fact, a broken motor mount.
Hope that answers your question.

I hear the same thing whenever I hard shift into second and loose traction. I think it is in the suspension some where. Because if I shift hard and have traction no bang. It only does it whenever I spin the tires in second.

It is the engine banging around. TCR, the reason it only does it with you when you brake the tires loose, is because the motor moves alot more than it does when the tires don't brake free.

bump.

I think i have the same problem.. it did that 2 times in a row the other day..

I did another post but im not sure if its the same problem.. no one answered anyway

Never happened before.. still doesn't happen.. its like the sound of a metal sheet caving in or sometihng.. Like i said in my other post.. similar to the sound it makes when someone sits on the hood of a car and the hood caves in ..

Is it possible to get additional motor mounts maybe?

It's the lower trans mount bushings giving too much on the hard shift. What your hearing is the bracket on the trans slamming into the aluminum casing around the smaller rubber bushing. Just put the urethane bushings in and you'll be fine. You could just replace the smaller bushing. It won't clunk and you won't have the vibration that everyone has when they replace both.

www.newedgeperformance has the Prothane bushings. I replaced both of my bushings, but I'm pretty positive it's the smaller one that's causing the noise.
