I was just curious if anyone on the board has removed thier power steering? If its anything like my other cars, all I would have to do is remove the pulley, buy a shorter belt, and leave the pump, lines, and other hardware on. Can anyone think of a reason why this would not be feasable? I KNOW I can't be the only person on here that likes the feeling of true steering .

oh man, eliminating the power steering? now, granted on a car that is OEM w/no power steering is ok...
have you ever driven a car with powersteering out? or the belt broken? OMG! this happened to me once while driving... SUX! i bet i lost 5lbs trying to muscle the wheel just on the way home to fix it! i wouldnt suggest you do this unless you find a way to retrofit a new mechanism to replace the existing power steering components IMO, it wouldnt be worth the time/labor to attempt the change, cuz you would probably have a helluva time changing it with something that would work... unless there is a NO power steering option on the focus? then it probably wouldnt be too hard |

it needs the lubrication of the power steering fluid. Driving like that for any length of time would mess up your world.

sounds like this is not a good idea. man there you go again bursting my bubble. oh well.
I did like the way it handled in my civic without power steering.. and my skinny arse actaully got a chance to work out my arms while i was driving. maybe now I'll jsut pretend its harder instead.. lol |

You could lose the power steering, but you would have to put in a manual rack and manual steering gear ( cant remember the difference in ratios between power and manual steering). I believe manual is 15:1 and power is 24:1. I may be backwards. Those are typical ratios. not set in stone for every car.

I did like the manual steering rack in my old 3 cylinder metro It does give great steering feel.
