Default Fuel Filter

I just got finshed changing my fuel filter and I noticed that the fuel that dripped out of fuel filter was extremely dirty. I know that its job is to filter out all the crap that is in the gasoline but I just wanted to know if there wasn't anything wrong in addition. To me the stuff looks like rust and maybe the filter was rusting inside. It sure was rusting on the outside pretty bad. Here is the pic of the stuff that came out of the fuel filter:

How many miles did you have on that fuel filter? My problems with fuel starvation are getting worse, maybe first I'll change my fuel filter.

it looks like rust but it may be just debris in your filter and the oil color makes it look like rust. pour off as much oil as you can and keep the stuff at the bottom in that container and set it in an airy area. if it continues to oxidize then it's rust.

Fuel filter should be changed every 30,000 miles.

I had mine changed at 19K and it was quite restricted. It only gets gas from reputable places and avoided filling up when the gas truck was there. I'm thinking 30K may be a little long to change.

I was going to start a "how to change fuel filter" today, and then I saw this thread. Wicked
Anyways, how would I change the fuel filter and what tools do I need?

Some basic instructions:

1) Open the relay box under the hood and take out the relay for the fuel system which is number 12 and blue color on my ZX3.

2) Turn on engine and let it run in netral for 5-10 minutes until the engine stalls. Mine took about 15 minutes.

3)Disconnect the ground terminal from the battery and support your vehicle appropriately. I used ramps under the rear wheels but I would recommend jack stands because it was a little tight for me underneath the car.

4)The fuel filter is located in front of the gas tank towards the right side underneath the car. You should easily be able to spot it.

5)Unbolt the bracket that holds the filter from the frame and disconnect the the fuel lines from each end of the filter. The service manual recommends using a special tool to disconnect the lines but you can easily do with your fingers by pressing on the tabs until the ring pops out. You'll know what I mean when you look at it. Make sure you put a pan underneath when disconnecting the filter because gasoline will spill out.

6)Connect the new filter in. The fuel hose on both sides should snap back on easily . Bolt the bracket back on the frame. Put the relay back in and connect the ground cable.

Took about 30 minutes for me to do.

You could also use the fuel cut-off switch in the passenger's side kick-panel to shut off fuel as well (like pulling the relay). Just an FYI.

Well I went and bought the filter at Pepboys for like ~17 bucks after tax. I went to my dads house and we did it there. It was easy and maybe 1 or 2 drops of gas. I didn't disconnect the battery or any fuses. I must tell you I wish i would have done this sooner. My car doesn't hesitate any more and doesn't have the hard starts it would have. It also pulls really hard just like when it was new. Im really happy as i thought maybe my engine was already going by by since it was so sluggish and would hesitate at steady freeway speeds.

With the fuel pump in the tank and as long as the line is not pressurized (let it sit for about 10 - 20 min or remove the fuse and try to crank at said earlier) you should not get any more then a few drops. The Pump creates a plug at one end so when you take the filter off the little bit of fuel that at the ends will come out but it will create a vacuum at the other end so it will not drain a bunch of gas all over.

As far as doing it in an apartment complex it should be fine.

I did mine and that hardest part was getting that darn screw undone off the metal retaining bracket. After that it was maybe 10 min if that.

I did mine Tuesday and I found that if you unclip the fuel lines along the bottom of the car it gives you more play room.
