well my gas cap light came on today so i stopped and checked it it loooked like everything was fine, so i tightened it and set back out. well it stayed on so i checked my owners manual and it said that the check engine light would come on, and sure as sh*t it did. so i was wondering if i can just go on and get a locking one fomr napa? or if i need to get one from ford. but what i can't figure out is the stock on looks fine any help would be nice. thank you

I was under the impression that the gas cap light stays on for 4 consecutive run cycles (of 5+ miles). So, if it was perhaps not entirely tightened the first time, it might still be on for a little bit longer. Wait it out and see...but it will definitely turn off on its own once the situation has been rectified. They're not GMs with their damned Service Interval Lights.

^ as guitarseth posted

If the light continues to go on (usually after the 5th time you run the car), you may have an emissions or gas vapour issue. If this is the case and you already replaced the gas cap with a Ford/Motorcraft one, take it to a shop or dealership that has the right diagnostic equipment. Most cases, a light that's always on indicates an issue with the evaporative emissions/gas system.

You can pick up the locking one from NAPA - I have one on my Focus, in fact - I've had it for at least 2 years now. The hardest part about that install was getting the new one to slip into the retaining ring.

Getting the cap tight enough to not trip the light is idiotproof - tighten until it starts popping, and you're set. If you don't routinely do that, start. You can then safely assume the cap's fine, and should expect the light to (eventually) go away.

It'd also be worth asking the guy at the parts counter if his little scanner thing can cancel the gas cap light - at least then you'd know sooner if that did the trick.

Nice swear filter bypass. :-/ We don't do that here.

Other than that, looks like you've got some answers to your question. Welcome to [FJ]focaljet. :-)~

Dont just check the tightness of the cap check to make sure that the cap is on straight.
