Question "Floating" speedometer

Recently I replaced the clutch in my car and also installed a phantom grip, so I had the tranny out and apart.
Now the car is back together and running fine except the speedometer needle is now "floaty".
The car itself isn't fluctuating speed, but the needle is moving +-2mph or so.
This is also affecting the cruise control.
The cruise is constantly adjusting the pedal due to the mph fluctuation so it's unusable.

The tachometer appears to be fine.

Any ideas appreciated.

Car is a 2006 Duratec 2.0 5 speed.

Sounds like the vehicle speed sensor or VSS got bumped, broke or dislodged during the R&R process. Either that or you bent or broke a tooth on the pick up (or sensor) ring.

I took a rediculous number of pictures during my rebuild and I can't see a bent tooth on the sensor ring, but that does sound right..
I guess I'll start with inspecting the sensor and go from there.
I really don't want to pull that tranny again.

Interesting... we had the same problem with Mrs. Blue's ZX3 after a tranny swap.

We replaced the VSS and it didn't appear to help, oddly enough.

A scanner with live data values would definetly help with the diagnosis. A scanner with graphing ability even better.
