Default Alternator Failure at 80K - Voltage Regulator?

My sister's got a '05 with the D20E engine and she's just had an alternator failure (no charge) at 80K miles. Given what it takes to R&R an alternator on this thing, any chance it might just be a VR failure, and the VR alone could be replaced? I've actually done precisely that on a '95 Zetec engine (Contour), but not sure if the Duratec has a similar type of alternator. Don't know if access might be an issue that makes that impossible - car isn't here in front of me to see.

Thanks...

the vast majority of premature alternator failures are VR issues...

pull it and check the brushes, if the brushes are good then replace the VR

My alternator went out at 38,000 miles not bad considering the warranty went out at 36,000. The SVT is a pain to get to but i picked mine up from Autozone for like $135 better than Ford's $300 one. I'm now at 81,000 and no problems..."knock on wood"

My alternator went at about 75k. It was the bearings that died.

Yep, that's been my experience as well. Anyone know if you can replace the VR on this thing without removing the alt, or is access too restricted? Also, does thing have a typical Ford 3G alternator which shares the same VR? I've already got a few spares on the shelf.

no idea about the 3G thing. But if I had to guess, id say wayyyy too restricted.

if it was the bearing then it wouldnt spin at all. friend of mine had that happen, seized up and frayed the belt almost started a fire...

I think it would be easy to test if its actualy VR first before removing the whole alternator.
