Default Oil Filter Life

With synthetic oil the change interval is longer than with standard oil. But, will most oil filters still function as they should when their mileage greatly exceeds 3,000? One of the reasons I ask is that I have seen one filter that has it's replacement interval printed on the filter, but that is the only filter I have seen it.

I use a Castrol Full Synthetic. I can run about 5,000-5,500 miles for my oil change intervals. The Motorcraft oil filter holds up fine for that amount. I auto-x the car every month when I have the chance. I personally wouldn't let any filter go much longer then that.

Depends on the design of the filter. I don't know what most filters SHOULD go to but some filters are designed specifically to hold more crud but those same filters don't filter as well as other filters that are designed to catch particles of a smaller size. Then again the filters that are suppose to filter better also don't flow as well. It's all a cycle.

this is a tough subject because there is alot of disagreement.

Porsche recomends 30k miles between oil changes and filter changes every 15k. (Porsches use 10 to 13 quarts of oil)

Mercedes was 15K on oil and filters every 5k.

Honda is 15 and 5

BMW was 10 and 5.

MB and BMW are now using FSS that moniters run time, mileage, and temperature to recomend when oil changes are due.

The thing to remember is the manufacturers want to push oil changes back because it lowers the yearly cost of ownership. This number has become more and more important as a selling point so anything they can do to lower this number, they will. Oil changes dont bother them because descent oil is going to do ok and by the time there is a problem, you are out of warrenty.

In my car, I run mobil 1 synthetic for 10k miles with no filter change in between. My engine has 170k miles on it and I have no sludge or problems so far.

No body here said dont change the filter at every oil change. What I said was that some manufacturers recomend extended oil intervals with filter changes in between.
