Default 49mm Offset, will they fit?

Hi.

Please can someone tell me if this
wheel/tyre combo will fit.

--------------------------------------
Current: Stock Focus @ 45mm 195/55/15
Proposed: 7X 17'' @ 49mm 215/40/ 17
--------------------------------------
N:B
Local garage said I need to get them
'ground' down as they are too large (49mm)
and will not fit on.

Grinding wheels sounds a bit dodgy?

Lastly I've also been informed by my friend
that my 'speedo' will be way out as I need
45 profile tyres on 17'' and not 40.

Thankyou.
Ben

I don't know anything about the offset size, so I won't try to bull sh@t you about it. Now someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe 17's with 45 profile are closer to your origional stock size than 17's with 40 profile. If that's the case then your spedo should be fine.

that MAY work, but 49mm would be awefully close to your struts and suspension stuff. that may even rub the fender lining.

Hmm, ok then, probably have to give that one a miss.

Thanks for all the replies

Actually if I am not mistaken the stock 15' wheels have a 52mm offset.I would still be a little concern though because the combination of the 49mm offset and the wheel's 7inch width is cutting it close. You have to remember that the wider the wheel the closer it gets to the dampers for example 17x8 wheel with a 40mm offset is closer to the suspension parts than a 17x7 wheel with a 42mm offset.P.S.Suspension experts correct me if I am wrong.

No, the stock 17x7 wheels on the SVT Focus have a 49mm offset; one of the engineers told me himself.

However, those wheels of course are designed to clear the brakes, so be sure you do your measurements properly.

Ed:

You are correct regarding the SVT. It will come equipped with 215/45ZR-17's mounted on a 5-spoke wheel with a 49 mm offset.

A lot of the Team Dynamics wheels can be had at the 17" size with an offset of 42 or 45mm. IMHO, this would be the best way to go as far as aftermarket wheels are concerned and things working properly.

But...

There's no telling if the SVT Focus uses a fatter hat on the brake rotor that would push the wheels out further to begin with - thus allowing the wheel to clear everything. So on the SVT it will be ok, but it remains to be seen if the SVT wheel or any other 49mm ofset 17x7 will fit on the standard Foci. I'm thinking that the few who have responded with a "no" would be correct.

What about the ATS Mercury wheel at 17x7 with a 42mm offset?

These wheels are awesome.

The focus wheels have a NEGATIVE offset, which means the centerline of the rim is offset inboard of the hub face. A wheel with a 45mm offset will stick OUT 4mm further than a wheel with 49mm offset. The Regular ZX3 wheels have a 52.5mm offset and the SVT wheels have 49mm offset, I think.
