wheels = the part that attaches directly to the lugnuts. this is what most people get as aftermarket parts.
wheel covers = a plastic/metal combination that goes over the wheel, to give it a "classier" look. lots of cars come with wheel covers and steel wheels (i.e., focus lx)
hub caps = sometimes confused with wheel covers, this is a portion that goes directly over the hubs, or lugs. lots of trucks are made this way, as are the focus zx3, zts, etc.
rims = often, far too often, confused with "wheels", a rim is a thin piece of metal, creating a "ring", or "rim", to be placed around the outter edge of a wheel to give it some "bling bling" effect. again, lots of trucks use these (i.e., chevy s10).
