Default Just boasting.. (Got\'em today!! update: ST200 rims weigh 20 lbs)

I just scored myself a set of those ST200 wheels off ebay for.... read'em & weap... $91 (+$95 shipping of course.) Not a bad price for what I consider to be one of the best looking wheels out there for a focus. Slid my bid in there with only 9 seconds left!! My appologies to Ebay member StainOnYourDress, if anyone knows him/her.

My Ebay Score!!

I'll be inspecting them... BUT- you have probably been here long enough to have noticed that I got them from the same guy everyone else has. I haven't heard of any major complaints... YET. Their supposedly OEM wheels- God only knows where this guy is getting them cheap enough to sell them for less than a hundred bucks for a set and still make enough money to make it worth his while.

NOW... if I can only find some bargain basement Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's

I'm sure another dealer in another country is asking why all the cars that used to have those wheels now have steelies.

I have a set of these wheels from that seller.
My experience was just fine.

I've developed a theory about where they are coming from...

My theory is that somebody got their hands on some OEM casts from Ford. How? I have no idea. But this guy has been selling them for quite some time now.

I think there is somebody in SoCal knocking these wheels out for this guy. No, I don't have any basis for this idea.

Oh yeah, congrats on the wheels, they rock!

Yea, I thought that too... like these aren't EXACTLY OEM per-se.... like if he had someone copying them maybe he could do it on the cheap. I would have thought that the cost of manufacturing alone would be well more than $25/wheel though, but what do I know.

Damn, I would'nt care if they were Ford factory OEM or not, a set of 17s for under 100$ is a steal. I would even buy them for that much, even if I did'nt use them.

Well, by the time you count shipping you could round it to be about $200. But yea, that's a great price for such a nice looking set of wheels. Funny to think the tires will cost more than double the price of the wheels!

Mostly I ask where this guy is getting them so cheap out of curiosity though. There have been a number of people using these rims happily, so I'm totally cool if he's got some guy casting these things in his garage... I'd just like to know so I can laugh about it with my friends.

Got my wheels today! I'll take & post some pics of the very minor imperfections- a couple small chips in the paint, etc.

So I weighed them by stepping on my digital bathroom scale (about 5 times each) by myself, and then holding the rim. Comes to about 20 lbs give or take .1 lbs. I was supprized since I was expecting them to be about a pound more. It will be interesting to find out what my stock ST rims weigh sans rubber. I'll have to wait till spring for that though.

So just for giggles, anyone have an oppinion on machining some metal from the rims to save some weight? One area I was thinking was on the back side of the spokes there's a cast in section where the offset info is... I could machine a bit of metal out of each one of the spokes in that area and save maybe a pound/wheel. Horrible idea?

bad idea, just get smaller tires 215 40 17, or empty your trunk. That would be like wanting to shave some of the control arms down to save 2lbs per corner.

I really don't believe this theory at all. They are too "perfect" and somewhat "imperfect" for it to be true. First off the inside of the rims in the spokes is grey, which to cast, then paint/powdercoat/then clear would be way, way too expensive.

And second, one of my wheels, as many of the people who bought them will say, have a long kinda scratch in the clear around the outside of one or two rims. Ford would call them imperfect definitely.

My thought is they were either purchased from like a warehouse that closed, bought them wholesale from Ford as rejects, or they're definitely "hot".

It would just take too much effort to make them worth it for only $25 a wheel. It would cost more than that in materials alone.

Default Re: Just boasting....

I think the wheels are probably just "seconds."

While $25 sounds insanely cheap, the factory that made them probably sold them to crazypayme21 for $5 each. When the factory bid on the Ford ST200 14-spoke wheel contract, they knew what their scrap rate was likely to be. The price Ford pays for its 1st quality wheels is enough to cover these seconds from a material, labor and overhead standpoint. Depending on who is making them, it might cost more to have them taking up floor space than to just dump them on an eTailer. crazypayme21 took a risk by spending thousands of dollars to buy a lot of seconds (a literal "lot") with the hopes that there are enough buyers interested in them. Seems like it was a good gamble.

Any idea what the actual shipping cost was compared to the flat rate you had to pay? I'm guessing that's a source of revenue for crazypayme21 as well, though that might average out if some shipments are actually $100+.

Enjoy the wheels. If they were cheapo garage-jobs, you would have read about them here, I'm sure.

Huh... I think that's the best explanation I've heard so far.

Shipping was probably about 90lbs in a box about 20"x20"x30" and I think he used DHL for shipping. So someone here can probably figure what his average shipping cost might be.

I've been keeping a running average of how much each set of rims is going for on eBay. After about six sets of rims the average is about $130. He's got a new set up for auction every 4 days. So he might have bought a "lot" of rims... but he still bought a LOT of rims!

I bought mine from this guy quite a long time ago now (almost a year as I recall).
Good experience, and a KILLER price on a really nice set of wheels.
Can't beat the deal.

I bought two sets from this guy. Although both sets were packaged loosely, and the wheels had minor belmishes, the price is more than right. The rim has the right specs, and looks great on the Focus.

Hmm.... might be a viable alternative to the FRPP 17" white rally wheels i've been looking at. I know a guy selling a new set for $800 CAD.

I could buy these, ship them up here, and have them powedercoated for less than the FRPP wheels! That, and these ones are 4lbs lighter each!
