Default Lightest Wheel

Hi,

I just installed 16x7 Rota Slipstreams on my ZX3. I went with Falken Ziex 512 in 205/55/16. (Yes, they do fit with a full Eibach Pro Kit.)

The Slips look great, but I am a little disappointed about their weight with these tires: 35.5lbs each.

Yes, this is a savings over my stock 16" w/ Pirelli P6's that weighed 40lbs each.

However, my wife's 2000 Focus Wagon 15" wheels with used Firestones only weigh 33lbs. (By the way, I'm selling all my stock wheels- if anyone is interestedaerandall@hotmail.com

I plan on upgrading our wagons wheels as well- but would like to go lighter. What is the lightest wheel currently offered for the Focus bolt pattern and offset?

Thanks in advance.

My RPM's weigh 11.5 pounds. With tires( 205/45/17 Parada Spec 2's) they weighed 33.5 lbs.

teh Slips are probably 1 of the lightest wheels you can buy.

Just remember, that the ligher you go, the less metal meterial is used, thus causing them to not be as strong.

so they'll bend and break easier.

I'd look into different tires if you think thats too heavy.

Lighter doesn't always mean less material is used. It can mean what type of process was used to make the wheels ie. forged or cast or billet. I am running forged wheels at almost 15lbs each and they are very strong.

usually, it does. because once you get too low of a weight for a well. you run into strength issues where it can't take any road hazards, has trouble supporting the weight of the car, and they usually use less material to make them lighter. they remove material from the hub and the spokes, making them lighter but also weaker.

One of my Centerline RPMs just cracked a couple weeks ago The wheel is still useable until I can get a replacement from Centerline (hopefully for free). Didn't even look like it hit anything, no dents anywhere else on the wheel, just a fracture right through one of the spokes.

Point is that lightweight forged wheels can still break. Centerline said their newer RPMs have more material and slightly more weight after a reported higher-than-average number of defects in their older RPMs.

EDIT: Pics are up for your inspection. Notice the lip around the wheel... no evidence of impact. No idea in hell how that fracture got there.

And I spoke to Centerline, and they're working on getting me a replacement wheel that may or may not be free after what they deem from their inspection. Guess that's the best I can ask for at the moment, altho it'll take them two weeks to build me a new wheel

I would like to see the location of the crack.

I have RPMs that are dented up (I will never run 17" wheels again), but at least the rims seemed to have excellent ductility. I was able to hammer them back pretty well with no visible cracking... and one event had bent the wheel bad enough that it wouldn't hold air.

you don't want to compromise strength just to have the lightest wheel, it comes to the point where is having a super light wheel worth replacing or repairing because of it breaking or bending...

This post isn't directed at anyone, but the thread title says "Lightest Wheel" not anything about breaking, bending, melting or anything else.

There is a compromise with lightweight and it's always going to be strength. My RPM's haven't cracked, haven't bent... haven't done anything 'cept worked. Now, If I went plowing over a curb I'd EXPECT them the bend.

The 'problem' is people want light, strong and CHEAP. It ain't gonna happen.

Rod, was it a 17" wheel that caused the problem or a low profile tire? I'm guessing a 14" with a rubber band wrapped around it will bend as well.

I won't run anything lower than a 45 series on the street, but our roads are pretty decent around here. If I lived on the coast, I'd have 50 series at the least.

Phillip that was with 205/45s. And yes the culprit is in fact the low profile tires, but obviously with the limitation of tire OD, there is no option.

I am currently running 205/55/15s on OEM wheels and I haven't been able to damage them yet. I plan to go to 15" Centerlines with 205/50s but am quite leery of that low profile tire resulting in more damage.

WTF... Are you guys re-inacting "Dukes of Hazzard", running over curbs, speed turtles, how are you guys tearing up forged wheels like that?

Axis ? There's like 20 different models to choose from.

How about posting the weights of their lightest wheels, followed by information on where one could buy them for the lowest price.

Also- I'm not set on 17" wheels and tires. I will gladly use 15" if the combined tire+wheel weight is lighter.
Thanks!

Shhh, I'm not a sponsor so I can't relay info via the threads. I don't corrupt the system, but I take care of Jetters as I did at Center Line. Any info has to go through email darren@axiswheels.com to keep me honest.
No gold Ms.Kris. Only on your teef.
Wonderful Friday to all

I'll vouch for that! Free t-shirts... free polish... spare wheel stickers. It was great!

Too bad my RPM's still look so nice or I might have to buy news wheels.

The crack is on the close-up pic, that stretch of line running through the spoke near the center cap. Didn't even look like it hit anything. If I did hit something, it shouldn't crack the spoke w/o damaging the rest of the wheel. These are forged wheels, they shouldn't break like that. Btw, they're powdercoated, they're not actually THAT dirty, lol.
