Default Wheel frozen on hub - how do you get them off?

I've been soaking it in PB Blaster for days and beating it with a mallet.. Even broke one of the strut tower bolts off doing it.. sweet!

What do you guys do to get stuck wheels off?

Also, what do you do to them before you put them back on to prevent it from happening?

hmmm... you've tried the normal methods.. Soak w/ PB blaster, bang the bell out of it from behind.

Is it on a lift? or just jack stands? I've layed underneath before and kicked the hell out of it before. On a lift, a good heavy mallot shout get it off since you have the room to swing. Jack stands are a pain, I can never get enough of a swing laying on my side/back.

A buddy w/ his VW loosened his lug nuts slightly, drove around the block once slowly and that broke his loose.. (try at your own risk!!!!!!!!!)

when you put it back on, grease the hubcentric ring (and take your wheels off more often )

It's on jackstands, and doesn't have a passenger side halfshaft or knuckle, so driving it around right now isn't an option, or I would do that.

Maybe I'll try to find a bigger mallet.

    Thanks for the reply!

Like mosaholic2 suggested, kick it or try a 6' 2 X 4... wedge it wherever (at your own risk, of course...).

As for preventing stuck wheels (the stock aluminum ZX and SVT wheels are a tight fit on the hub's register), I take one of those 99¢ brass bristle, wooden handle wire brushes and brush the rust off of the hub and brush the aluminum corrosion out of the wheel's hub register bore. Follow that brushing with a thin coat of teh paste lo0b of your choice.

I used to lay a long board under the car with one end pushing against the rear side of the stuck wheel and then beat the hell out of the board with a hand sledge. It takes some time but I strongly discourage you from laying under the car, kicking the wheel while it is on jack stands.

um. How about putting a 2x4 under the tire with no lugs, and let it down. Weight of car should bust loose.
wipe both hub and wheel surface with some WD 40 or bearing grease. Just enough to leave a sheen.

I run into this problem almost everyday at work. Aluminum wheels frozen to steel hubs on cars. We have a big rubber mallet that we use to solve this problem. Personally, on my car, I had this problem the first time I took my wheels off the car, I used a wire wheel on a drill to get rid of all the rust and corrosion on the hub, then applied a thin layer of white lithium grease to the flat surfaces that meet when the wheel is on the car. Haven't had a problem since.

I dothe same thing where I work you could also use some Nickle anti-seize it will last fore ever to where White Lithium Grease will eventually dry up from the heat of the brakes.

You think I spend that extra time and shop supplies on customer cars that I have to get out as quick as possible? No. Only thing I do if i have to is take a wire brush to the hubs to get the crap off them. I even asked the boss if we did that, he thought I was joking.

    Get under the car.

Make sure it's well supported by jackstands, etc.

And kick the **** out of the wheel with both feet.

Also, maybe have somebody to catch the wheel too. Or, steer clear of anything near the wheel.

... I don't think the wheel is physically frozen on the hub, just rust and stuff keeping it stuck on.

...or am I an idiot and will a blowdryer get a rusted connection off?

    I'm hoping just rust.
But a torch to heat up the wheel might work too. Not sure a hair blower will get hot enough. Y'all scare me with all this laying under cars and kicking stuff. Just let the thing down with no lugs. Just be sure no one is laying under it. ;^)
