Default Question about Wheel Offset...

If someone could verify this with me, or if I have it backwards... I am trying to determine how wheel offsets differ...

Just for the ease of discussion...

A wheel with an offset of 45mm is going to stick out further than one with a 50mm offset. Or do I have this reversed?

I ordered a set of ASA AR2s for my GTI, but they won't be in until the end of July... I've been getting antsy, and now have completely changed my mind, and I want to go for Borbet Type XL, the only difference is the offset, and I'd eventually like to lower the car some, and I don't want rubbing issues.

Thanks in advance!

The 45mm offset will stick out further than the 50mm.

offset is the distance in mm forward(+) or back(-) for the centerline of the wheel width.
the higher the number the more wheel on the INSIDE
the lower the number the more wheel on the outside.
0 offset or ET means the wheel mounts dead center in the width.
8" wide wheel you'll have 4" on either side of the hub surface.

one thing lots of people miss/neglect or don't know is the offset and center line are from between the inside of the lips where the tire mounts not from the outside faces of the lips.

Yes, if its the same style wheel. Different wheels have different spoke characteristics(sp?)
But theoritically, yes, they should fit better, since the wheel is pushed away from the car.

spoke design and caliper padding on each wheel is different.
worst comes to worse, you can always add a small spacer to get the caliper clearance you need.

True, and 5-10mm spacers shouldnt be that hard on the studs or the hub bearing right?

Thanks for answering my question! I found a website with a formula that shows what the difference would be, and for some reason yesterday (lack of caffeine I guess) it wasn't clicking in my head.
