It really comes down to what you want to do with your car. If you want to be competitive at a local auto-x level, you need the RE-01R's, Star Spec Z1's, or RT615's. If that is not important, choose a tire with a better treadlife and better wet weather traction. Don't try to substitue an all-season tire for a winter tire. They aren't even close when the roads get slippery. Nate

Thanks Nate. I may autox the car, may not. I'm still undecided. Either way, I put about 1-2k miles on the car each year so treadlife isn't that big of a concern and I don't have to drive the car in the rain. If I do, I have no problem taking it a bit easy.
The car does not see snow either. I have a dedicated set of snows for the Focus and they are 10x better than any all-season I've driven on.

Seems like an easy choice to me then. Either the Star Spec Z1's from Tire Rack, or the RT615's from DTD. Both should be pretty reasonable <$125/tire, and will get you where you need to go. Dunlop might still have their $50 rebate as well which sweetens the deal even more. If it were my money, I would go with the Z1's after having owned both. Nate

Exactly what I'm doing
I'm just double checking that 215/45/17's will fit on the XR with the wheel combo/suspension I'm using before ordering.

Well, I ended up getting the Z1 Star Specs in 215/45/17. Here's how they look mounted and on the car:
http://forums.focaljet.com/team-rigz...-new-post.html I haven't had a chance to really run them hard, but so far I'm very impressed. Low ride noise, STIFF sidewall, lots of cold grip. I can really launch the car and they just grip and go. I have a feeling the diff is going to let go on me before the tires do.

Nice tire...you'll like. We're running 215/40-17s on the ZX2 autocrosser.

Well, I drove the car to work this past week and encountered some very heavy rain (going 40mph and it was hard to see, had to slow down more). I had to pull out of a very bad intersection and couldn't see a car coming until I was already out into the road. Matted 1st, around a corner, pouring rain, 15psi to near redline, no tire spin. These tires are great lol
