Default 18" x 9.5" Wheel... what width tire?

Okay... obviously... this is not for a Focus!

My G8 wants meatier tires under it, but I want to keep the 18" dia size.

Stock is 18"x8" and I think going to 9.5" width will fill the wheel wells very nicely and allow for some meatier tire underneath.

Any resident tire experts (OmniscientFocus) want to chime in with opinion?

    Thanks!

*and before you say "Go ask on the G8 boards"... well, I'm doing that too, but I respect the opinion of many of my FJ peeps, and there is tons of knowledge on here.

    Stock tire size is 245/45/18

I want to retain the same profile

Is the stock setup staggered? TireRack lists a 245/45/18 so i am assuming not.

I think a 275/40 is perfect. Not only is it meaty, but also the exact diameter of stock (26.7 in).

You could run the stock size in front and that 275/40 in back. I think that would be your best bet.

I want to retain the same profile
Meaning, keep the same sidewall height and overall tire diameter.

    That sounds delicious...

Come on now...if people can roll 10's on a Focus, you can do 11's on the G8.

We were talking about that heading home from the grocery store last night.

"I'd like a bit wider wheel."

"Yeah, I agree. 18x12 would probably work well"

Hale, how agressive of a tire are you looking to get? You want 20-25k miles or can you get away with half that? With an additional 1.5" you can increase your tread width by the same amount, or 30-40mm. You had mentioned stagger, are you looking to run a square tire setup? I wouldn't think you'd have any issues with a 255/275 setup on 8.5/9.5" wheels. If you wanted a square setup, I'd have to bust out a ruler to see how easy a 275 on a 9.5" would look all around.

    Once again, i'd like to point out;

If Omni can put 275's on a Focus'

305mm bare minimum on a factory 'heavy' fender flare RWD V8 is the only thing that can be considered.

I want to see 1 more inch of wheel and more tire.

Just the kind of input I was looking for (other than FOK, ) *I'm just looking for a euro-cruiser look, not an american-muscle look.

I love stagger, but square of course makes life easier.

275/40/18 on a 9.5" wide wheel would look delicious I do believe, with just a mild 1" drop all around

BTW... there has been not one response on the G8 board yet.

You'd have to check fitment running 275's up front. An Agressive offset wheel would most likely rub a dub dub.

Omni put 275's on a focus with thousands of dollars of modifications to maximize performance. Not exactly what Hale is looking for. But, you are probably right. A 305 with the proper offset may fit under factory fenders. A 305 needs more than 9.5" wheel which the OP was asking about. Cost of wheels and replacement tires goes up SIGNIFICANTLY at that size.

I will be checking fitment You can fit a small child between the tire and the inner fender as it sits now.

All of that info is exactly correct.

    Not either of my children.

I appreciate your input for sure Brad (and everyone else... even Drewski )
