Default Cooling Fan not Working - Engine Overheating

I am hoping someone can help with this question. My son has a 2002 SVT Focus. A problem with the engine cooling fan not working recently started. The cooling fan will not kick in unless the air conditioner is on. If the air is not on the fan will not come on and the car overheats. The vehicle is still covered by the extended warranty but we are wondering if anyone else has experienced this type of problem.

    Thank you,
    Ken

i've had the same problem with 2 of my escorts. All i did was unplug the wires (plug) from the fan and cleaned it and then i sand the metal connections on the fan (where the plug connects) as well. It's been working fine ever since.

Usually the problem is the low speed cooling fan relay, it is a $23 part and thats what we usually sell when people come in for this problem. If you llok in the owners manual it will show you which one it is . Sometimes if you tap on the relay it will start to work.

look into the cooling fan resistor.
    this is where it is.

I had the same problem, I went out and bought a new relay, nothing happened, then I happened apon this, and bought a new one from ford ( I cant remember the part number) and worked perfectly. It snaps in above the fan housing, and its kinda, a square piece of plastic with a metal shroud around it and a plug going into it. if you want to buy a new one, I suggest looking up steve from tousley ford. SVTPARTS I think is his focaljet name. he gives AWESOME pricing on new ford parts.
