I would suggest a new gasket.

As long as all the outside and inside (spark plug area) bolts are removed, then take a rubber mallet and just tap on the corners. It will pop loose.

Did you take spark plug wires out first?

do that only if you don't care about oil leaks

just keep tapping with a rubber mallot. don't "pry" cuz our heads are made of aluminum which will score quite easily, leading to leaks like you wouldn't believe

I don;t think you need a new gasket. I have used mine about 20 times. Just clean it well before reinstalling it.

Or pry with a non-marring item. I found that a Bondo spreader fits in there and can break the seal without risking damage to either item.

All you have to do is hit it a little bit with a brass hitter deal to cause it to break loose a little and it will come off... If not then go captain insano on it and be sure to get a new valvecover ...

I had this exact same problem, work a wedge in between the head and the cover. I poped up enough to where I could pry it up without a problem. My valve cover does NOT leak.
