Default Newby Tuning Questions

As I stated in my "New Here" post my expirence lies in restoring old muscle cars so forgive me if these questions are a bit remedial.

1. Does the Focus SVT have a bigger intake manifold and if so will it bolt to a Zetec 2.0. I'm assuming they're the same engine with the SVT having more "performance" parts bolted to them.

2. I've read alot of posts about people porting and polishing heads, has anyone had any luck "decking" them as well? In the old muscle cars you could change the compression ratio by shaving 0.010" off the head. It also served to better mate the head to the engine block. One of the dangers of this process is having the valve smack against the pistons.

3. Has any one had their engine bored out. Again I used to do this alot to older engines but I'm not sure how it would work on these smaller ones. My biggest concern is boring into an oil journal and such. Also, how much can you bore out without running into trouble?

I searched for these before posting but couldn't find them anywhere. Thanks for your help.

Not sure about number 1, but yes it is a zetec and it isn't.. the SVT zetec has a higher flowing cylinder head that also gives the engine an increase in compression.. as well as a better crank, rods and pistons. the engine block has oil squirters. I probably wouldn't deck the head, just use a different head gasket, different heads, or different compression pistons. I'm not sure how much it equates to in measurements, but I know the zetec can be bored out to displace 2.1L but i'm not really sure about any more than that

The SVT has a "DSI" manifold. It uses 2 different sets of runners..longer at low rpms and shorter at higher rpms. Bigger isn't quite the right word, but yes, it is better and will bolt to a zetec, but will require some method of activation for the runners. (rpm switch, etc.)

What your refering to with "decking" is actually milling. Shaving material to increase compression. You can do this, it will work...i've seen people mill as much as .060. Do not reccomend this on a stock bottom end though.

Dunno anyone that has bored out a zetec really. Tom at Focus-Power has a stoker kit now though (2.3L)

SVT does have stronger internals, but the increased compression is from the different head I believe (which has VCT to btw).

If your looking for real power from a Zetec, I strongly reccommend an aftermarket head, as the stock one flows like crap.
